you could get the complete kit from 1a auto and go ahead and do both sides http://www.1aauto.com/1A/DoorHingePi...74/653815/1988

I believe that kit is just for the upper hinge. Theres a thread on here about how to replace the roller on the lower hinge.

I bought that exact kit. It has the upper 2 bolts with bushings and the pin and bushings for the lower hinge. The parts are of good quality and my door opens nice and smooth now.

According to their page, that is Upper & Lower. So since when did the kits go from only being found for $200 (for both doors, uppers & lowers & from other suppliers) to $13 (for both doors, uppers & lowers)?

If anyone can confirm them faster than A1 can, gonna ask them, I'm ordering FAST! Be easier than swapping the 91 Firebird doors onto my 87 GTA. No messing with the ground FX or the GTA's arm rest brackets.

Non-Greaseable vs. Greaseable.
eBay vendor vs. Lon (long-time member w/credibility)

It looks like a nice kit, but its your car and effort.

Greasable vs non-greasable does not make the worth $194 extra & being a Dorman part, it is gonna be a good part. Plus TDS wants $74 (vs the $14) for the non-greasable part & if they lasted our cars 20 years before needing replaced? I'll save the $126 & do it again in 20 years (if I still have the car at 61 yrs of age). I could care less if it came from Joe Blow. Besides...The Seller is RockAuto who is a Sponsor here on TGO & I've heard several good things about them. Who makes Lon's/TDS kit?

I'm just not real crazy about the Shipping price. $17 Ground Service shipping for a $14 (2 sets) part that would fit in a $4.95 box from USPS?

Yeah, that's my only complaint with Rockauto is the unrealistic shipping prices, but they're still cheaper than any of the other ones.

PS - I love the people that say you should buy the extremely overpriced versions because that seller is a sponsor here...Not at 8 times the price.

2 thoughts....

Isn't RockAuto a Sponsor here on TGO too? So buying from RockAuto would still support a site sponser.
And it being a Dorman part, that means it should be available at Autozone (their website shows it for $9.99)/Pep Boys/O'Reillys/NAPA/wherever you choose.

Re: door hinge pin kit

I did not say you should buy it from Lon and nowhere in my post did I say anything about him being a sponsor. I said "credibility" which is what Lon has. Don't put words in my mouth. I've dealt with Lon and his products and have nothing but positive experiences.

The question was asked what was the difference. I was simply pointing out differences. I've dealt with RockAuto before and have no complaints about them.

Re: door hinge pin kit

I just got off the phone with 1A Auto and she is confused as to why there was a notification that went out . They show zero balance in all warehouses for this part and no PO ordered for more. I told her to put me on the list for a set.

Re: door hinge pin kit

duct tape and jb weld cheaper haha ... All kidding aside most of the hinge kits do not help since is what really wears out is the hole that the bushing goes into. Until that is fixed if wallowed out don't expect a miracle.

Re: door hinge pin kit

I just got mine in the mail today from 1A Auto. I don't think my doors really need them though. If someone wants the kit, I'll sell for what I paid. $34.95 plus $5 to ship. There are two doorman kits....enough to do both doors. If no one wants them, I'll put them away and use someday...lol.

The Dorman part # 703266 is the parts for the LOWER HINGE ONLY. Recently just blew my 91 TA apart for new paint (pics soon) and I've been to all the GM dealers here in town trying to find parts for the door hinges. Also spent the last 2 weeks on the internet finding out anything I can and where to get them. The dealerships I've been dealing with don't know squat either. 3 of them have sold me everything for the lower hinge after I specifically said the upper. DUMB.

My lowers are fine. Most of them are. The uppers are what seems to wear out on most of our cars. Whether it's 1A, RockAuto, or wherever you get the kit, it's still the same one as the Doorman kit. They even use the same picture on their sites as the Dorman kit you can order at OReilly's for $9.95 (like I just did), and has parts to fix the both upper and lower hinges.

Only other option is the TDS kit, which I will say is pretty slick beings how it's greasable. My honest opinion though, is it doesn't warrant the price of 8x that of the Dorman part, but you have to keep in mind, it's probably the best one and they're the only ones selling them.

So what is the best method for replacing the upper bushings?

One at a time with the door still attached to the car?

Do it right, take the door off. Otherwise, you're going to be fighting it and scratching paint.

Re: door hinge pin kit

But Ive also read that if you take it off, it is a pita to align things back up.

Doesnt look too bad to get to with an air dremel with the door still on. Definately not worried about the paint, car needs painting as it is, but I dont see how I would damage it unless I went crazy. Hardest thing it appears will be not hitting the weatherstripping to much.

Re: door hinge pin kit

That's why I said take it off. It can be done with it on the car, but it's way easier with it off. 9/10 times, doing the hinges is going to throw your alignment off anyway. Get a buddy to help put it back on and go from there, or try it with it on and be careful. If you're going to paint it anyway, I'd wait until you take it apart for paint and do it then.

Thanks for the help.

As far as paint goes, it will be several years before painting, but Ive had people ask me if my passenger door was going to fall off! Im going to take my time and give it a try attached.

Re: door hinge pin kit

Well, I ended up grinding the top pins out, then knocking the bottom pin out, then removing the door.

Didnt need to align the door when I finally got them back in. Close enough for this car.
