Passenger side generally gets less traction off the line because there's a ~175lb person in the driver seat so the 35lb battery + 20lb spare tire would balance it out at least a bit.
I put mine on the passenger side and I put the battery switch in back of my rear license plate since it folds down BUT just so you know I only bolted mine down because the metal battery box wouldn't fit. But don't forget in order to run at the track you have to have the battery sealed off from the passenger compartment.
sealed an vented if it's a standard, acidic battery.......
if you drive the car everyday an don't have access to a flatbed or go to towns where it isn't the best i would keep it down in the well or on the drivers side so that you can have a spare. but, if it isn't a concern with the spare then i say put it in the passenger side where the spare is. i had my tray welded in place rather than drilling holes to keep it secure.
as far as sealing off the battery i strongly recommend spending a little extra an getting a dry cell battery; red top interstate an the like are fairly reasonable an have excellent warranties.
most tracks will require a outside shut off valve to compete, where you put it is up to you......i myself don't have one because i don't want a large whole drilled through the body; but if your competing i suppose it isn't a concern.
