First Intake and a blower?

I recently saw this thing here on another post, But my question is has anyone used this intake with a force fed aplication? I run a D1SC on a ported stock TPI unit at the moment and ive been looking to upgrade for some time now.

It will work but probably not as well as an alternative intake design.

It is probably better than the hi-flow base, ported slp runners, and ported plenum I ran - but just swapping that to a singeplane picked up 10mph in the 1/4 mile on a supercharged setup. Boost dropped a hair if I recall, which tells me the intake was the ultimate restriction in the setup. The combination of more peak airflow to the cylinder, higher efficiency (less total boost @ same airflow = less temperature in the charge) makes a lot more power.

I'd look into a singleplane, or an HSR, or something along those lines. Even the chinese single planes are based on a 1205 gasket, and with a cheap 4bbl throttle body and a 'hat' will make tons more power than any long tube setup.

Hey Joe, how much time did you drop with that 10mph gain? I will be swaping to a miniram soon after I find a new driveshaft and kind of wondering what to expect.

About a second, but I always had traction issues after the swap. When it was TPI and naturally aspirated it was a 13.1 car at like 103 or something with 1.60 60 foot times on slicks.

Adding the blower it was in the high 12s, at 109-110mph but it wouldn't hook.
I think it ran pretty much like 12.80 at 110.

Swapping to the single plane and it ran 119-120mph every pass, et's were low low 12s to mid 13s on the same MPH.

I probably could have ran a 10" wide slick and it would have hooked, but I was running a T5 transmission.

The car was 3640 with me in it, and I think 119-120mph at that weight translates to something like 550 flywheel horsepower?

This was almost 10 years ago. I think I added the blower in 2001, and raced the car until the end of 2003 when the frame split. The car was soo twisted from racing and beating on it the t-tops didn't quite fit right anymore.

Re: First Intake and a blower?

FIRST will work alot better than a ported stock TPI unit Even better than aftermarket TPI stuff since FIRST TPI is alot bigger than those units.

Its a nice looking unit. If you want TPI, i'd go for it. Its the best TPI setup right now and would be better if they made siamesed runners for it.

I had a buddy at the track that had a corvette based L98 with aftermarket TPI, big tube runners stuff and a procharger. ran mid 12's at 112 mph from what I remember with like 12psi. That was a nice little combo.

If you had heads/blower cam and well tuned, it would be ALOT faster. Probably mid 11's if you can launch it and get it to hook up.

What is the runner length? I'd still be concerned that you would end up over camming it.

Re: First Intake and a blower?

Ive been getting sh*t from my buddy for a long time about putting a larger intake on this car. The engine is fully built for the blower, both heads and cam are matched to get the most out of the procharger. The last part is the intake. Its a stock TPI with 36lb injectors and a 1000cfm throttle body. The runners were opened and siamesed, and it helped a bit, but i think hes right. Its time to go larger. The #1 thing i love about the TPI on my set up with the blower is the low end torqe kicks it instantly, and because of the blower as it makes boost it pushes the engine past where the TPI would normaly fall short at 4400 rpm. Mine pulls strong to almost 6100.

Runner length is on par with the big tube setups out there currently. Its larger diameter keeps CFM demand up so its still capable of pulling a few more rpms than stock or aftermarket big tube TPI.

Now I'm not sure what the current motor has as far as heads and cam go, but higher flow intakes are never a bad choice. Even on stock heads, L98's pick up power with higher flowing intakes that would outflow the heads if you just looked at cfm flow numbers.

A blown motor I think would pick up, especially in the higher rpm ranges since power wouldnt fall off as much.

We would have to put the front ends of both cars together, because we would both want to drive all the time. lol

I really like this intake. Mostly because it has the same idea as the original TPI and I love the way it works with my combo. I know that with a bit more room to squeeze that much more air in, would make a huge difference. especially with a pro-charger.

Brand New 350 forged crank and lightened rods, Forged 8:3:1 pistons with total seal rings, fully balanced and blueprinted. The heads are performer RPM with full 1:6 roller rockers. The cam is a comp cams the specs I don't remember, I built this motor about 6 years ago.
The Tpi is fully ported with a 1000cfm throttle body, Siamese runners , and 36lb injectors, all controlled by a DFI gen 7 system.

Im sure Im forgeting a lot but thats the jist of it.

Re: First Intake and a blower?

Yeah, sounds like a FIRST TPI may be a minor step up in performance. Having siamesed runners on your TPI extends the rpm range alittle more and the more you siamese them the more it acts like a minram/stealthram type setup. FIRST flows alot more but still has a long runer. It may have similar RPM band as what you have now, but still should make alittle bit more power, depending on how fully ported that base is.

Re: First Intake and a blower?

Yeah the base is ported to be gasket matched, as well as cleaned up all the cast marks in the runners. So Its not crazy but it should be definitely flowing better then stock. Theres only so much you can port on a stock intake.
