What single plane setup + elbow will clear firebird hood?
Hi..
Need some help figuring this out quickly...
What combinations of single plane EFI intake + elbow will clear firebird hood?
Also suggestion of all parts needed are welcome
- EFI intake 1206 ready
- Elbow
- Throttle body
- fuel rails

Re: What single plane setup + elbow will clear firebird hood?
Pro products hurricane, 1206 port (on AFR 210 heads)
Edelbrock 3848 cast elbow
94MM LS2 throttle body (cable driven)
Stock LS1 fbody throttle cable.
And it clears the FORMULA hood with the throttle body angled to the DRIVER SIDE.
The bottom of the throttle body is about 2" above the valve cover. To clear a GTA hood, I suspect you would need a shorter intake like a victor E. The Hurricane is 6" tall where the victor E is around 3.75".

Re: What single plane setup + elbow will clear firebird hood?
thx.. I already looked at your setup
But I want the TB to facing forward
I looked at the Victor E and its 4.6" CH
Looking at the accel pro-ram but cant find any fuel rails for it and I need to confrirm I can use it with some elbow.
And what TB should I get 90mm Ls1 style?

I'm in the same boat as you. I want to turn my elbow forward for when I switch to a twin turbo, but the throttle body will hit the water neck. The 3848 elbow can mount front or side. Mounting it forward on the PP intake will probably strike the hood. Might work on a lower intake, but then I'd still have to deal with the water neck issue.
I don't recall any edelbrock elbows that were lower than the 3849, which I also tried. 3849 has a weird sweep downward, but clears the stock hood. Again - water neck trouble. I guess a block off plate, and a remote thermostat would do it but.

Well your intake is 5,12" CH
Wonder how high the "limit" is?
someone must have a single plane EFI setup on a firebird?!

I ran a singleplate with a stock GTA hood in the past, but ran a 4bbl throttle body and a turbonetics hat. That was a holley intake.

Re: What single plane setup + elbow will clear firebird hood?
Is this possible to use ?
http://www.sullivanperformance.com/y.../tbadapter.htm
And If using your current set up but shorten the elbow some is it then possible to turn it forward?
Any suggestion on what TB to use?
Seems like a LS2 TB and IAC/TPS is going to cost some $$ almost cheaper with a custom elbow and use the TPI TB....

Re: What single plane setup + elbow will clear firebird hood?
Well 3 options so far...
One issue is the thermostat housing since the TB will be above it. The HSR housing is 2.5" up from base and there is still some room between it and the throttlebody so It could be a little higher, will measure it later......
Need to find the thermostat housing height on the other ones....
Worldproducts 5.625" carb height termostat housing 3.5" up
Victor E EFI 4.6" carb height termostat housing 3.5" up
Holley EFI 5.5" carb height termostat housing ? "lower"

$100 and ships to your county for free. IAC and TPS will be another $40..

thx! How high is that? since it must be able to fit over the thermostat housing...

Re: What single plane setup + elbow will clear firebird hood?
The easiest way is the holley EFI single plane due to the waterneck issues but I dont like its small ports and that its best to add material to make it 1206.
So I will order a Victor EFI or the motown EFI and make it fit.

Re: What single plane setup + elbow will clear firebird hood?
Did a quick mockup today with the Motown single plane intake.
With TPI throttlebody placed above waterneck house will give a total height of 24.5cm from base of intake to throttle body plate.
A quick look says you can mill the waterneck around 3mm and the thermostat housing on the intake another 6-7mm to get more clearence.
If you need more clearence
- massage the top of the waterneck
- make an offset adapter for the IAC passages or a complete remote IAC housing
- move the throttlebody back a little

The Motown has 1 threaded hole less then TPI/HSR in the front, but has 2 in the rear.
- Move temp gauge sender to rear
- Move heater hose to rear
- drill and tap a third hole in the front
What have you other guys done?

Re: What single plane setup + elbow will clear firebird hood?
First testdrive done
No big issues, sweats some around thermostat housing and temp gauge showing way to little. Maybe depends on that its now placed in the rear of the intake?
In worst case I'll have toweld in a extra bung in the front of the intake...
Will need new VE and some AE tweaking.
My HSR (ported) def flows more air than this one ( unported so far )... Will see when the single plane is ported how the diffrence is.

Re: What single plane setup + elbow will clear firebird hood?
This week I tried to add the Motown to my 84 Vette. when I purchased it there was no published height. It turns out it is way too high. Maybe my Vette is the lowest of the low on hood clearance. anyway the Victor E EFI manifold cleared by .125 inch with Edel universal TB(1000cfm) and 2.00 blower bonnet(spectre).
I have the Motown for sale in classifieds.

The vette is much lower than a firebird hood.
