Maaco Paint jobs

I was wondering if anyone had any paint work doen from them. Do they do body work before they paint also, like i have rust spots on parts of my exterior, will they take care of that before they paint it?

I took my car there for an estimate because my buddy got his 300ZX painted there, they do a pretty good job for $5-600. They said that they can, for an extra cost, take out dings and stuff.

My brother got his car painted from there. They said they would put a primer on the car before they painted it. No evidence of primer whatsoever.

We did all our body work before sending it to them. The paint is still holding on okay and they do a pretty decent job. Take off all the stuff you don't want painted because they don't mask much.

from what I have heard Maaco does a good paint job only....as far as thier prepping work and body work they ARE lazy, at least the maaco in my town is. I just had an estimate on my car and he guy that was estimating it said if i wanted a 2 tone paint job, that would take more time and he would not do as good a job as he could do because he has other cars to do.....he told that to me... a potential customer...but ne ways just their paint is good.....also with overspray, anything you don't want painted, take it off the car.....

Bad A** pics Mike...its cool that you are restoring your LeMans now...

Thanks black85transam-I can't wait till its all done. But trust me. The LeMans is not going to be touched by Maaco. The guy who is going to paint the car is a perfectionist.

i just had mine done at Maaco, but i did all my body work, including primer. they told me they dont do any primer, they just machine sand it then shoot the color. they masked everything fairly well and shot the paint smoothly, my only complaint is that it's a little thin.

I had my old 85 z28 painted at maaco. When it came out of their shop, it looked good, except for the wavyness of the paint. (I think the waviness is my fault because of the way I sanded it) They also painted the spoiler and other parts so thin that you could see right through the paint if it was bright out. About two weeks later I started getting little chips all over the front and top of my car, and my girlfriend (who bought the car off of me) told me about a week ago that a 1 inch patch of paint just fell off the top of the door. The patch was to high to be a chip, and all that peeled off was the top coats, their primer and everything was still on the metal. Anyway, we are in the process of getting all of the warranty papers taken care of, and after that we'll see what happens.

Some have had great luck with them, like camrs89. Others, like me, have had horrible luck with them. I guess it comes down to the individual shop doing the work.

Mine lasted about 3 years before it started going. Now it's starting to flake off around the mirrors and other edgeds.

I called maaco and told them I needed my car painted. This is how the conversation went:
Me "I would like to have my 88 IROC painted"
Maaco "How long do you plan on keeping the car sir?"
Me "I plan to be buried in it, why?"
Maaco"Oh, I guess you want a good paint then!"

From what I hear, they don't "tape" They put vasoline on the windows and easy things that should nopt be painted. When thehas dried they hit the car with a pressure washer and since the paint will stick to the vas and not the car it rolls right off. tape and paper takes to long. I would talk to body shops and see what they say. You might pay a little more and have to do the body work your self and all they have to do is paint, but it will look better. Unless you can paint the car your self. I have done parts of my other car, but that was a school.

augh

They did my Probe a few years back. What a mess
Ambassador jobs suck. The paint chipped away, they got my
rims, weatherstipping, radiator, etc .... horrible

My fault for listening to the salesman I guess

never again

My 87 was painted by them a month before I bought it.

Looked real nice when I got it.

About a year later the fading set in big time. Its about 3 years old now and just looks like total crap. The roof, hood, and hatch are all faded flat nasty blue. Looks like freakin' blue primer. Not to mention the thing was COVERED with overspray when I got it.

I will NEVER let them touch a car of mine.

Uh Oh............

I had my 86 TA done there. Sorta knew the guy. A friend of a friend so to speak. Paid around 600 something (not ambassador). Told him I wanted a "good" paint job, and that I'd pay extra for a few coats of clear coat on it! It was also extra cause they had to do my GFX a different color.
We went around the car and he circled all the flaws that "I pointed out to him".
The car is black, and it's kinda hard to see "EVERY" little tink (tiny dent)
Well, when the car was picked up 5 days later, it looked great from a distance! I got up close, and saw a few more little tinks that I didn't see when we went around the car b4 the paint job.
Wouldn't you think they would've fixed the ones I didn't see? Apparently not! Grrrrrrrrr, that was one thing. 2nd is, behind the driver door window, (just b4 the rear hatch) I can see tons of hairline cracks all in the paint. (must be a very thin coat) As well as little chips here and there. Paint job is 5 months old! everytime I wash it, I find another!
There is some over spray on the GFX, but what did I expect for 600? At the very least, not cracked & chipped paint after 5 months!
Now that I'm laid off from GM, I'll have to take the 2 year warrenty papers to them, and have them repaint the car, fixing all the dings they missed the first time.

A little late to make a long story short, but I wouldn't let them do it. Save your money and get a "GOOD" one somewhere else!

There's a saying about tattoos but I'll substitue here:
Good paint ain't cheap, and cheap paint ain't good!
It's your decision, good luck!

Oh, here's a b4 and after....it still looks way better than it did!

Every MAACO place is gonna be different... you'll need to research the ones near you to find out if they are decent or not. The one near me that did my '73 VW (pics on my website, link below) always (ALWAYS) have a zillion cars and trucks lined up for paint, including lots of Vettes and fancy custom cars and trucks. They also post pictures of their past jobs in their lobby and will give you references so you can talk to folks who have had work done there. I did alot of prep and stuff that's outlined on my website, and my Bug came out beautiful. I plan on taking my Pace Car there when I get to that point in its resto-rebuild.

Hey, which Maaco did you take it to? Sounds kinda like that one by the home depot just past cross roads. They didn't have the fancy cars there, but in the guy's office that did my estimate, they had pics of some nice cars. A few 60's stangs, I forget what else... and I think there was a yellow beetle too. Maybe it was yours?

One thing to remember is that individual shops are gonna be different....
Ask to see some examples of cars they have done......real life in the shops (not pictures).....Also ask about overspray and such BEFORE you get it painted......

If they feel VERY confident in their work they should have no problem writing in the contract that you will get credit towards payment if they mess up your paint.......

just my .02

It's the MAACO on Rockwell up by Wiley Post Airport. They're always doing interesting cars there.
