What about Maaco paint jobs?

Someone explain to me why I wouldn't use Maaco instead of a local body shop. My 86 Camaro painted by Maaco (base coat, clear coat) with PPG paint, sealer and etching primer including door sills, interior hatch etc. for $900. The local shops cheapest price quote is $2600.

Maaco offers a 4 year warranty while the local guys offer 10 year. The local guys strip the paint down to metal while Maaco sands original paint but does not take it down to metal.

You guys have any history regarding Maaco?

Before you have a custom pearl color mixed up that nobody will ever be able to match, give some thought to using a stock pearl color. I painted my GTA "Crystal White". it's a 2001 Lexus white pearl color. I saw a ton of pearls that looked murky and tan, and a bunch that had a "pink" look to them. This one was the whitest pearl I ever saw. The best part is, you can see the color on a car before you have it done. Just stroll on down to a lexus dealer and see if you like the color.
Here's 1 pic that sort-of shows it on my car:

Maaco sucks ,I will NEVER take another car there again. They totaly screwed up my car, the paint started flaking after 3 months.
It is a darn good thing I did not let them touch my Camaro or someone would have been hurting.

3 months?!? Wow. I've had my Maaco paint holding strong for the past 6 years. Yeah, the shine's shot, but it's not peeling off. 'Course, I did my own bodywork, brought them a prepped car, and DID NOT go to the Maaco that I heard bad things about. I went to the Maaco that everyone heard good things from. Ask around the neighborhood about Maaco jobs, and avoid the shop you hear the most bad stories from. I just put a big list of "prep work" on the bodywork board.

The maaco by me does good work. I would probably go there if the car was going to take the daily abuse of chicago driving. Why spend big money on a paint job just to have it messed up? Maaco=some good, some bad.

Yeah, I've had Maaco paint on my car for 4 years or more, and it surprises some when I tell them where it was painted. If you get up close and know what to look for, you can see it wasn't the absloute best paint job ever, but it is pretty nice, especially for the price. I take care of the paint though, its always clean and usually waxed. 1 thing my car has had over the years is the front bumper peeling for no reason BS. I had a local shop do it twice and even theirs is starting to peel again. It depends where you go.

Yes , after 3 months the paint started flaking, I was upset but did not really care because it was on something other than my camaro. Plus i got one of the $199.00 paint specials.

Well, the main thing is is that anything you get is going to eventually get scratched and faded and all other kinds of wonderful life crap. Also, nothing is perfect.

I'm slowly having parts of my Camaro painted at a local shop. There are flaws here and there, it isn't perfect, but the car is looking ALOT better. In the end, it's probably going to total to...about 3,000 dollars for all new paint.

Look at it this way...as long as you don't go to Earl Schieb (the 1 yr warranty is really only a 1 yr warranty, here, people) you should be all right.

*is anyone has a quality Earl Schieb paint job, I apologize if I offended you*

If you have a $199.00 car, then get a $199.00 paint job.
