Getting Paint off Wheels

Is there any way? A long time ago I busted one of my wheels and the only other one I could find was red. BTW they are 91-92 Z28 wheels. So for a long time I've been cruising around on 3 silver wheels and one red. I'm tired of hearing, "What's with the wheel?" Any ideas?

You can strip the clear and paint off of the red one and repaint
and clearcoat it to match the rest. If you do this make sure the
rim is prep properly before you clear coat to prevent peeling.
You can also do what I am
doing with mine, and polish all of them. I use a paint stripper
called Tal-strip from Advanced Auto Parts, there is another called
Aircraft Remover sold at Auto Zone or Walmart. Either of these
will work fine for removing the clear coat and paint, but you may
have to apply a few times. For more info on polishing these
wheels you can check out my thread in this board called Polishing
91 z28 Rims. It also contains some before and after pictures.
Good luck deciding what you are going to do.

I just used the stripper. It got 80% off, but there is still red in the pits that is being a bitch to get out. Nazzz28-Did you sand all the paint off with 220 grit or did you use various? Cause mine is really time consuming. I have been sanding for 2 days on 2 rims and still on 220 grit and still have red fragments left.

I did not sand the inserts because I did not polish them and
probably am not going to. One reason I'm not is because I like
the contrast between the polished and unpolished rough
inserts. Secondly, It would take forever by hand an I do not have
a mouse sander. I only used the stripper on these parts and a
plastic scraper. It did take 3-5 applications but all of it eventually
came off.

Good luck

I will post some new pictures next week. I am finishing the last
one and am using my uncles paint booth this weekend to paint
and clearcoat the inserts. I am going to tape over all of the
polished surfaces and then spray with a charcoal color paint
I am choosing on friday. I am doing this because I want a little
more contrast between the polished and rough surfaces. My car
is red but I don't like the red inserts on these wheels that much.
I also thought about silver but felt it wouldn't contrast enough,
and black did too much so I am going in between. The added
bonus to charcoal is my interior theme is charcoal and red, with
all charcoal grey carpet, headliner, sail panels, interior plastics.
I also have 1997 30th anniversary charcoal seats with the
pleeted bangle strip red inserts, and I had some custom door
panels with the pleeted bangle stripe material and charcoal
carpet made. Finally, I have some red racing pedals and z28
embroidered floor mats. I think the polished 91 z28 rims with
charcoal inserts will add the needed exterior look.

I will post some pics of the before and afters of the rims next
week, and hopefully some pics of the car and interior soon. The
car is in my uncles shop right now undergoing a engine swap and
some paint touch up, because some rust is peeking through on
the quarters. I cannot afford to get the bodywork and paint
because my budget is tight, but this should look nice and hold on
for another year or two while I save up the appropriate funds.

Yeah, I would like to see that pic. I was wondering what to paint my inserts. Black, silver, aluminum

I should be able to post some by the end of next week. I just
need to let them dry before I polish them again to finish them off.
The only way they won't be done is if something comes up and I
can not get into the paint booth this weekend .
