started taking clear coat off my rims, need help.

I started taking the clear coat off one of my rims today, I have only done 1 rim so far to get a feeling for it.

I put the aircraft surface remover all over my rim and let is sit for 10 minutes, I saw peeling and blistering so I figured it was working, when I hosed it all off, the gray paint on the sides of my rims stayed in some spots and it looks like ****, I put another coat on it and let it sit for another 10 minutes, more came off but alote is left.

The bare aluminum on the other hand looks great, I polished it and man does it look like a new rim. But after 2 coats I still see spots as if the clear coat is there? did I do something wrong? was I not supposed to put the stripper on the gray painted areas?

anyways I am going to sand the gray parts a bit tomorrow and spray paint them black. expect pics very soon.

I had a couple stubborn spots like that too, I used 2 coats of stripper then got the rest with a scotchbrite after i'd rinsed the second coat.
And the paint stayed on mine also, just what had gotten into the pores, I just left it, and scotchbrited & painted over it after polishing.

cool, I will scotchbrite mine tomorrow when I do the rest of them

my paint is like a sick looking layer. it shows areas where the stripper got in, but there are faded gray areas and plain aluminum areas, it made my rim look disgusting lol!! lol

I've got the early 3rd gen "turbine" wheels that I used the aircraft stripper on... took four and five attempts to get some of the stubborn spots of paint off inside the vanes. It was almost as much fun painting the vanes...

I get mine at autozone, its called "aircraft remover" I hear they sell it at walmart and lots of other places too.

Everyone says too use the kind you brush on, not the spray.

I use "Tal-Strip" that I get from Western Auto, about $20/gal, have also used the spray but the brush-on works better for me & is more ecinomical.
I get the cheap paintbrushes at Lowes.

Everyone calls it aircraft surface remover, but above that it says Tal-Strip II, ask for that if they never heard of ASR, it may help.

you can also sand it, just more time consuming.
