Well, there was a non-tech portion here a while ago (before I ever set foot here)
Apparently the non-tech got way out of control, some very bad comments were made, and Dirk shut the site down.
As a result, I remember Brad saying once before that there will never be a non-tech section here @ thirdgen.org. It's in your best interests not to ask for one.
If you want a non-tech section, I highly recommend you go to www.3rdgen.org , and sign up there.
Also, we do have regional boards, which do serve as a kind of "where is everyone from?" board. Also, we do have cruise information in our regional boards. Check the regional boards out. I've met a fellow thirdgenner from the boards before, about to meet some others later this summer. so try it out!

I don't really care for the idea myself.
All it takes is one post about religious views, or one with 'funny' pictures which aren't funny, or just gross to ruin it.
Even a thread like "X-box Vs. Ps2" would get out of hand... people would fight, and I bet that attitude would carry over to the tech parts of the site, ruining things.
Right now, everyone posts tech, and gets help. We have great attitudes here, but once we start giving our opinions on things, I fear this awesome friendly atmosphere we have now will drop to §hit. I would hate to see people not posting tech replies because they don't like someone, or agree about a video game being good, or views about abortion, etc.. etc..
Like the replies above, there are other thirdgen sites to post anything at. We even have a chat here too.

Regional boards rock!
Just my $.02....
Check into the closest region to you over in the regional boards, that would be your best bet. I met Mark from above and a few other guys from this site at the last carlisle, which would not have been neary as easy without the reg boards.
Anyways, I honestly think things should stay the way they are, we can do without the bickering over stupid topics and the dear abby BS. If I was looking to listen to people whining and the "my motor is faster than yours" crapola, I would sign up for camaroz28.com!
