Can anyone identify this model?

I just test drove a Camaro, VIN # 1G1FP21E9JL178767. the car has Z28 decals behind the front wheels and on the rear. Also Z28 decals on the dash board. There are no louvres on the hood and the interior is a very cheap looking grey fabric, on the trunk is a low level wing, the steering wheel has to be the ugliest thing I have ever seen on a Camaro! I am from England so could do with any help you can give,

Welcome,

Here ya go.
Made in: United States
Manufacturer: General Motors
Make: Chevrolet
Carline Code: F-Body
Carline Series: Camaro (all models)
Body Type: 2 door coupe (hatchback)
Restraint System: Manual belts
Engine Code: 305 ci V8 L03 (1988-1992)
9 is the CHECK DIGIT
Model Year: 1988

You're engine code is L03, which means it's TBI (throttle body injection), you're looking at a low 16 sec 1/4 mile stock.

man, that sucks.. a IROC-Z with a factory LO3 in it.. Perhaps with that car the hood louvers where optional. Sounds to me like the cheapest built Z ever.

He never said it was an IROC. But yes, IROCs did get TBI. Though I've never heard of a Z without the louver hood, an '88 that is.

Low level wing, Tbi, standard steering wheel, no louvers on the hood.... sounds like a 88 sport-coupe with z28 badging

in 88-90 irocs had iroc-z badging, not the z28 (if i'm correct)

mark is right about the iroc w/tbi. I checked out a formula firebird , opened the hood saw tbi laughed and walked away

Yep, but all had the Z28/IROC-Z badging on the interior dash.

Ya, you're looking at an 88 sport coupe, with z28 emblems where it should say camaro.

Yeppirs, exactly. If it is a TBI car, then it would be a 88' up car, which means that it would not say "Z28" on the rocker panels. 88'-up IROCs had the iroc-z logos on the rocker, the door, and the Z28 iroc-z on the dash. I would say it is just another sport coupe with Z28 badges on it.

Did you check the RPO label for "Z28"?

In 88 there was no "Z28" was there? I thought they dropped it and just made the IROC-Z. Cause then 91 was the "return" of the Z28, as the contract or whatever for the IROC series was up.

Thanks for all your help guys, I did look for an RPO code in the centre storage bin but it had been peeled off. I forgot to mention it was a 5 speed manual transmission too. The car drove real well and sounded great so I may still buy it but try to get the price down,

I'm agreeing with the re-badged theory because as far as I know the IROC/Z never got the base model spoiler, and if the RPOs are ripped off thats fishy...

Its probably still a decent car though, I'd just use it as price leverage. I wonder if this owner may have even bought it that way and never known.

Oh yeah and about the steering wheel: When I test drove my car, I decided right then that the steering wheel had to go! Now sporting a grant challenger. $45 (in the US at least), 15 minute installation or so.
