prepping for spray paint?

I just got done sanding off the clear coat on my spoiler cause it was lifting off the base in several large places and looked absolutely like sh*t. I couldn't get all of the CC off cause I got down to the primer in one little spot and didn't wanna risk pulling up primer in anymore spots, so I decided to put the CC on. I used Dupli-Color in a can and I must say that it layed down very well. Much better then I expected, very nice gloss so far without any rubbing yet. But I got different shades of green between where there was clear left and where there wasn't any left. I'm thinking about sanding the spoiler back down to the primer and using Dupli-Color's base coat and CC this time. It is a dark metallic green. Could I expect the same good results with the BC in a can as I got with the CC? Also, what is a good grade of sandpaper to get down to the primer with or any other good prep techniques. Any help would be great.

Tom

Start out with 150-200 until All the clear is removed and the base coat metallic green is feathered out nicely. Next Wet sand the entire spoiler with 400 checking to make sure every inch is sanded. Spray the base coat metallic green on with good light to make sure it's sprayed EVENLY and check the Shade of color against the original. When the Shade matches the original, you're ready for the clear. Spray the first coat of clear very lightly like misting it on so it puts a very light coat on. The next four coats gets applied in light, medium, medium wet and wet coats. After you're done, the next day wet sand the spoiler using 1000 grit wet with a foam pad and then 1200 wet with the palm of your hand. Next, buff using 3M's Perfect-it buffing compound first and then polish it with 3M's perfect-it polishing glaze using the foam pad. I did the same thing to my spoiler and it came out really nice. I'll post a picture when I get back from the GYM.

In this picture you can see how the duplicolor is a little darker than the original paint on the deck lid but close enough for an inexpensive repair. Also, notice how after wet sanding and buffing the finish matches well with the original paint. I used the Dupicolor base coat and Duplicolor Clear.

Here's a wider shot showing more of the panels. As you can see, in different lighting conditions it's very hard to tell that the color is a little darker. I painted all three spoiler pieces.

sounds like you might have viewed the job the same way as me. I did mine for about 6 bucks in materials cause I just used the clear and I knew that it couldn't possibly look any worse then it already was. We all know how sh*tty CC looks when it starts to lift. I'm actually looking forward to redoing it again using the BC too cause it will help me get better at the process so I can finally do my hood.
