Rustoleum Sunrise Red....

...is a perfect match for the red on my 92 Formula. IDK if this matters to most guys who have REAL paint shops, but if you're painting hinges, brackets, underbody and etc and you don't want to mix a batch or spend $30 on a special mixed spray can, this is out there for under $4. I did some work on my rear spoiler this past week, and thought I'd throw some of this color on there just to see if it worked, and it matched perfectly--which is pretty unusual for anything RED! I'm sure some guys will laugh at this, but I thought I'd toss it out there in case it would help anyone out.

DupliColor, available at most auto parts stores, has the correct color code for your/our cars in spray cans. I keep one or two cans on hand for touch ups since I have three cars painted in that shade of red. Make sure you confirm the color code since they have two shades of Bright Red. One is correct, the other is a bit darker.

Re: Rustoleum Sunrise Red....

True, but Duplicolor is more expensive, and about half the size. I bought Duplicolor for my white 4th gen Camaro, and it doesn't match as well as regular Wal Mart paint. Go figure. Anyway, most of the time you can't do what I did here with this red, I kind of got lucky. Red is one of the hardest colors to match, the fact than an off the shelf matched it was borderline miraculous. Could be this would also match better than Duplicolor, because Duplicolor goes off the code, which means it doesn't account for fading. My red is in great shape and looks stock, but may have faded slightly because I'm pretty sure it's not original paint--which means, again, it may not match OE anyway! Best way to do it is eye it up IMO. On an old car you'd be just as likely to have coded paint not match.

I guess we each have different experiences. I've used the Duplicolor for touch up on my 78 Corvette that I painted Bright Red in 1989. I more recently used it on my 92 Camaro for touching up some areas under the hood on the recent refinish where I didn't want to risk using the detail gun and get overspray where I didn't want it. I've used it on my 72 Monte Carlo that I refinished in 2000. All were great matches.

"Tis true that it isn't cheap.

Re: Rustoleum Sunrise Red....

On my spoiler now, being as inexperienced as I am with paint, I knew I'd be doing it 2-3 times. Special mix is $30 a can, and Dupli is about $8, so I used this Rustoleum when I knew it matched to save me some moeney. Until I know what I'm doing, money is top priority. LOL

I admire your ingenuity and know what you mean about saving money. I was a self-taught body/paint person (read trial and error) for a number of years, then went into small shop ownership, then to management of large collision repair facilities. Been retired for many years, but still keep my hand in with my own cars and a couple of select friends as my health will allow.

Re: Rustoleum Sunrise Red....

I want to do all my own work. Most of the time I'm learning how to do it as it needs to be done. Had this car almost two years, and have learned a lot. I've had way too many bad experiences getting ripped off by clown mechanics. Nope, I do it myself if at all possible. I put down a clear coat on it tonight, but it's gonna need to be gone over with 2000, and then I'm going to add another. If it's still not shiny by then, I'll move to the polishing stage.

Re: Rustoleum Sunrise Red....

You can get Sunrise Red in a spray can also. I used it on my gas cap and if you know the tricks on spraying from a "puff can" you can get near flawless results. You can hardly tell the difference from the gas cap to the fender not only in the color but the gloss finish also. Rustoleum has the best finish of all the "puff cans".

Yeah, spray can is what I'm using. Got them at Wally World.

Re: Rustoleum Sunrise Red....

I used dupli color on my white 89 formula, about 5 cans and none of them matched. The dupli color was creamy white as opposed to the bright white on the car.

Yip, had that exact issue on my white 4th gen. Wally World $1 paint actually matched it perfect. Duplicolor isn't always what it's cracked up to be.
