Question about painting..

Well I will hopefully buying a jeep wrangler within the next few days for a winter car (assuming i get my camaro sold in time) and have a question i need answered. The jeep is an early 90's model so the owner wasn't too worried about the appearance so he more or less covered the car w/ a few cans of spray paint and mimicked a camo pattern. Anyways, I was thinking of repainting the car once I get it to a nice solid color, black probably, and was wondering if I need to do any prep work or can I more or less just spray over the existing paint (after i clean the car obviously). My dad has an air sprayer, and I'm not looking for a show quality finish, just something to get rid of the "camo" look.

My advice is to sand off the spray paint. Paint will only stick as good as the undercoat and spray paint is not a good choice. Sand it down, primer it, then spray it with real paint.

ok, i figured it'd be best to sand it down a bit, then prime and repaint. How far down should I sand?? I heard that it's not good/necessary to sand all the way down to bare metal...?

Depends, if the paint on the car is very bad, going all the way to metal is the best thing you can do. If it is not real bad and pretty smooth, you can sand over it and paint.

Man by the sounds of it I would sand all the way back to its original paint coz depending on what type of paint he used & what type of paint you r going to use you may get a"reaction" and end up with all sorts of trouble. I would also think that he painted it without giving a F so you would probably end up with blistering or peel off. Show finnish only comes from long, long hours of prep work.
