stock valve covers

Has any ever polished their stock valve covers? I did a search and didn't find much. They are steel i guess. I took the paint off and sanded a bit and they seem polishable. Will it work and if so how can i avoid rust?

There's no way to prevent bare steel from rusting. You can clear coat it, but it won't stick and even if it did, it would probably turn yellow.

You might be able to powdercoat them clear.
