LEDs for what? I don't believe the underbody glow kits are LEDs, they are small neon tubes.

LEDs are actual small light bulbs. For instance, I have LEDs on the back of my rearview mirror that go from side to side that give it the nightrider effect. What are you after?

well i know that the underbody kits are neons but i want to try to degisn my own thing but with LED's so that i could have them go back and forth, or go with music like the neon can but it would be a cleaner look. and i could place them better then a 10 to 32 inch tube that would be more likly to break, rather then one little bulb which would be much cheaper to replace

i don't think it's a good idea because LED lights might look bright, but you don't see them ACTUALLY glow like the neons do. Unless somebody is looking right at the bulb they won't see the LED...

Young squeekers, let me put it this way, it will take ALOT of LED's to produce the same effect as neons, and probably cost a LOT more.

for those who say it won't look the same, it should if there were enough LCD's producing enough light. light is light is light, wether it is froma tube, a bulb, or an LED with neons you reflextion of the light on the gound, a VERY similar effect could be created with LEDs ... but it is probably not worth the money or the time to do it.

to get the kind of glow you want, you would have to find some wide angle, high mcd, LEDs, that woudl not be cheap, and mounting that many leds on the underside of the car is somethign i would not want to do.

thats true, i guess i go with the red neons on the underbody and stick to LED in the cab and engine bay.

just remeber there is more to adding LEDs then just hooking it to a 12v power source.

you have to figure the resistance need, and wire resisters in with the LEDs or else they burn up also there is the mounting issues of getting the to be pointed where you need them, and keeping them there, LED's are VERY directional light, unless you pay and find a wide angle LED that fits your needs. luckily red is a very common and cheap color of LED to get. so you should have problems finding red LEDs to fit your needs, you will need to get the equations for figuring the required resistance for the LEDs you are using, and follow it to a T.

yes and no, the LED is not a 12v LED, it is an LED , with the resistor pack built in, and are desgined to go into a standard bulb socket.

IIRC from a post I read as well, I think he's talking about using LEDs for the gauges. The guy posted pics of it and it looked awesome!

HOWEVER, have found a website that sells a NEON BLUE gague overlays for our 3rd gens!

I've seen a set and they are awesome!

Here's the link

http://www.procarparts.com/store/dis...8289FIRE-BLREV

But, this company is also selling them on eBay. I got mine for $26.99 + shipping! There are not any listed at this time, but do a search for "82-89 PONTIAC FIREBIRD 120MPH Glow GAUGES" from time to time and you'll find them a lot cheeper!

Later,
Mike

It was I that posted about the neons. i thought that it would go un-noticed too.. yea, for all the people that are going to stick with the neons i will tell you that leds are much better and brighter. a place down the road sells them and installs them professionally and next door neighbor bought a set. my friend liked that and he found a way to do it himself. the only thing he used google for was to find the way to make a computer thing for it. he made one from radioshack parts that made the leds scroll back and forth, chase one another all around his car, have every other one blink. hes a really smart guy. he goes to College in Chicago (i liv ein detroit) so i havent had much contact with him. first chance i get ill try to put up some type of document on here that will explain it all. but basically... he had a very thin piece of lexon with lik e1/8th (dont quote me) holes all along it evenly spaced. he wired each neon up and secured it with epoxy and then made a rubber back for it. he then mounted them under his car and they look great. compared to regular Street Glow brand neons you can see them very well on a really sunny day, and at night his entire car lights up. total spending was about 50 bucks and that coverd all wire, electronics, LED's Resistors (your gonna need to do some math). as pertaining to the websites... your gonan have to do some electronics searching.. cause you have to find a way to make them do what you want, and find out how to wire all the leds to the proper resistors. i believe theres a tech document that has all the led types and the resisters they need. anyway i would suggest this over neons primarily cause ive had too many tubes of neon break on me. anyway, everyones open to their own opinion.
