some paint questions

i am getting my car ready to paint this spring, and i have a few questions. i plan on using Dupont paint, is it any good?? I am going to have some racing stripes on it i think, so how many coats of clear coat should i have? my first though was to put 6-7 on, then sand bout 2 off, because i dont want to feel the transition between the two colors.

The car is going to be silver with a little metallic with black matallic stripes, is there anything i have to watch out with the matallic paint? I also plan on painting the engine bay the same color, do i have to do anything special to the paint because of the heat in the engine bay?

oh yeah, if someone wants to photoshop those colors on my car it wont hurt my feelings at all i dont have any idea how to make the stripes on the hood look right to the rest of the car, because i want the stripes to match the lines of the hood.

Dupont is grouse paint, they also have a really good Clear Coat.
I gather you are painting it yourself??? if so you will need a bit of practice before you start spraying metalics if you want a showcase job.

i have some practice on painting cars, just nothing this involved with more than one color and metallics. i actually painted my the viper red that is on my camaro right now.

i decided that i want to go with Dupont's Fleet series of paint. Does anyone know anything about that series of paint, is it any good?

Fleet series paint

I don't know for sure, but I suspect that "Fleet" series paint is their inexpensive line meant for fleet applications, such as school buses, tractors, etc. My brother got a free gallon of paint from a guy who paints cement mixers, and the body shop told him that it was a cheap paint which will look fine once sprayed, but is softer and more prone to chipping, and does not stand up as well to UV rays from the sun, so it will fade a lot quicker.

They weren't trying to get him to buy their paint, because they just suggested a couple different brands/types of paint for him to purchase and bring them to paint his car.

I'd check it out and make sure to get good paint. You probably only want to do it once.

understand that metallic paint although sparkles the most also fades the most; for a daily driven car it will show the most effects of the weather.

silver is the worst........

good luck in your choice.

Kandied91z: i didnt have any clue that matallics fade the most. but i really want a deep sparkly shine. and i really like the idea of silver with black stripes. What do you think would be the best way to go about this? would some type of light gray with pearl added look good? my car will only be driven during the warm months, if that will help me make a decsion.
