Question on mounting 4th gen rims

Question on mounting 4th gen rims

I have a set of fourth gen camaro rims (55 mm positive offset) that I want to put on my 86 iroc. I've heard that 2" SPD billet adapters will work for a third gen, but my stock rims have different offsets (0 front, pos 16mm back). Will I have any problems mounting the rims if I order these adapters? any help would be appreciated.

4th gen wheel adapters

First off, since I don't recall the mm offsets differences between the 4th gen 16" or 17" rims, which size are you wanting to use? Especially with 17" rims and say 275-40 tires, it'll also make a difference on the brand tire as some like goodyear tend to have a much squarer shoulder, and can lead to wheel rub on the inner wheelwell liner or ground effects during tight turns.

Your absolute best bet is to get under the car on a rack (or car up on stands, yet wheels in normal ground stance on concreate blocks) with measuring equipment, check the clearances between the wheel/tire to all suspension/steering/wheelwell surfaces. Compare the clearances to the deltas between your current rims and the 4th gen rims you'll be using. Make sure to allow for clearance for little things like balancing weights mounted on the inside bead of the rim vs tie rod joints. Some people will "live" with spacers that are a little wider than necessary to avoid suspension clearance issues. Too wide may increase turning radius, but can be better than wheel rub.

When I put the 17x9" SS rims and 275-40-17's on my 92Z, everybody was suggesting using 2.25" spacers up front and 1.25" in the rear. After measuring my setup, which has the Baer modified spindles for teh 13" front brakes, I decided that the 2.25's were way to wide up front, so my measurements indicated that I needed 2.0's. Upon installation, tight turns would put the tire hard into the rear of the wheelwell, and contacted the ground efects on the front of the wheelwell. Measuring again, I ended up going with 1.75's in front, and 1.5's in the rear to avoid any potential problem between teh inside of the tire and the jounce bumper mount in the rear wheelwell under sever suspension flex. This ultimately provided the combination that has been on my car ever since.

Bottom line, different years suspension components can make a difference too, so measure and determine your needs., then call someone like Vette Brakes, SPD, Performance Wheel Outlet, etc to talk over your car/wheels/tires and measurements.

I have an 86 and i use 2.25" spacers, all the way around. It looks good, IMO. I got them from SPD for around $300. The drivers side rear tire sticks out just a tad more than the pass. side rear. I believe the stock tires are just the same. Except the wheels stick out more overall with the 4th gen wheels on so you can notice it more. I am using 275/40/ZR17s. There is little to no rubbing in the front. Only when i turn the wheel all of the way to either side. Hope it helps-good luck

just get 2" or 2.25" all the way around, that way when you get a 4th gen rear, you can sell your rear set to someone that needs them for thier fronts.

The stock 16" 3rd gen wheels with different offsets were made to have a skinnier track in the rear for some reason.
I was running 4 front GTA wheels on my 86 and it looked great.
