Is this an LS1 engine?
Is this an LS1 engine?
Ok I don't know if this belongs in this area so if it doesn't feel free to move it.

I was wondering if those are spark plugs on the valve covers are a custom job or did the LS1 engine come like that. I just thought that engine looked pretty cool and that you guys might enjoy seeing it.
oh well...

Looks to me that those wires will not be long for the world laying on the headers like that. Anyways, it is an LT-1 with something custom with the coil packs.

I think thats what it is too b/c the LT1 intake does not fit the LS1 heads, as far as i know. Still looks kinda cool though. What kind of car was it in? An rx7? Looks like a 4th gen firewall, no?

the intake manifold and the exhaust ports are the easiest way to tell. eshaust ports are equally spaced on an ls1, like a bbc. the lt1 was the last "traditional" small block chevy, but it is a good looking motor...

Ok I'll shut up now since it's starting to get off the thirdgen topic.

I want that setup. I wanna get rid of my Opti so badly.
But yea, that is an LT1 intake with a DFI setup.
And I am almost positve that that is a 4th gen Engine bay. Need a wider shot of the front.

My guess: LT1 Engine with LS1 coil packs. I've heard some talk of a retrofit kit that uses the LT1 Optispark to fire individual coil packs, therefore making the Optispark more reliable since its only job would be to sense camshaft position. Just a guess though

Yeah, that's an LT1 with a coil per cylinder ignition. What thread was that associated with? I'd like to know what that ignition system is and where he got it. Lemme know.

Yeah, I know electromotive makes a kit. I was curious if that was what he had of if there was yet another company offering one because that install looks rather slick.

I think it is a 3rd gen rx7 the motor was put in
don't remeber for sure but the guy jim lab was working on putting a SBC into a thirdgen for some time now and I think he has done it by now

sigh...this is going to be one more casualty of the already few and proud remaining 3rd gen RX-7's. couldn't you find a mustang or firebird to waste your V8 fantasies on? i hope you don't even try to call that thing an rx7 when your done with it, it'd be like calling a transvestite a man. rest in peace, Rex, I'm sorry you had to go out this way.
my comments are nice car, like the motor and power output it makes.... but I agree with nrolfes1 on this one... it sux that he put it in this car (nice combo yeah). there where only about 14000 or so rx7's shipped to the Us between 93-95 so they are not that common and they have been dying off... just wish we could have more of the thirdgens around for my kids to see

If you want to run CNP (coil near plug, not "on plug") then just get the EDist from fast electronics. It's like $300 something and is very adaptible. The fancy way to do it is to go with an aftermarket cam position sensor (or crank) but if you're one in a million you could figure how to use a 96 truck vortec dizzy to work with the EDist, hint hint.
It's a great setup but I doubt you'll notice much if any performance difference on a typical street v8 motor. High revs require more spark energy and one coil firing 8 cylinders gives the coil very little time to charge and so your loose a lot of voltage. CDI will help a little but I wouldn't bother with any of the imbetweens. For the price and if you're smart, just go with the vortec dizzy and the EDist with any CNP chevy/gmc/pontiac coils.

There is a small box you buy for about $350 and this plugs into the opti-spark. Then you buy the LS1 coil packs and plug each coil pack to this box. Opti should last a long time since all it is doing now is using the optical pickup and not firing a spark.
I am going to eventually go with this setup.
There is a thread about this in LT1 Tech on camaroz28.com
My friend Curt with an Electromotive SDI setup told me about it a couple of weeks ago.
