few body work questions
few body work questions
Im getting my car ready to go to the paint shop.
My plan is to sand it down to the factory primer...
1. Is that okay?..or should I sand it down farther?
2. What grit of sand paper should i start with it?
3. Is there anything else I sould do to get the body ready to paint?
Any help would be great:hail: :hail:

Hi pskel350
The chap who is about to paint my car told me to leave it well alone! But, the last one I painted myself was only flatted off with 320 grit, to get rid of the shine. This is assuming that the paint is not peeling off or in really bad condition. It is not necessary, or desirable) to go down to the primer. The paint just needs keying in so the primer can "stick".
But, play this sensibly and ask your bodyshop for their advice!!
Take off everything you can get off (and get away with!) ! Like door handles, mirrors, badges, louvres, locks, etc before you go there. Nothing more irritating than overspray on your bits!!
Andy.

I prefer using 80 to really cut away at the top coat of dead clear coat and on into the paint. After that you can start to get a feel for where you will need to pound out dings and dents in the body. After taking care of those areas just work your way to 180 or 220; keep checking for dings and take care of them now or you'll be sorry when the car is painted. Remember, prep work is the most important step in the paint process. Good luck and be sure to take before and after pics.
