Hey I'm interested in doing this taillight mod to my car and I was wondering how you do it?

 

VHT metal tint.

Take the taillight apart, tape off what you don't want painted and then put on several thin coats. I am going to do this when I get a different set of taillights. I am not sure of drying time. Use yahoo or something and search for VHT the website will be right there.

I belive some people have used model car paint. Testor's has a Transparent Candy Red Metallic that should do the trick. Check your local hobby shop.

 

Yeah, Testors Candy Apple Red is commonly used I believe. Try a search, it will provide plenty of info on it.

i have that picture saved on my computer....i will one day be doing that to my car in the future......that picture is a photochop tho....u can tell by the amber reflection in the bumper

oh yeah i had a question with the testors paint....do u paint the inside or the outside of the lense?

 

For best results paint the inside of the taillight cover. I know I build models all the time. I have used the paint in question before.

 

i want to see what a finished product looks like before i go and try this. nice photoshop BTW.

 

Damn that car looks sweet, I am more partial red, white and yellow camaros but the black camaro butt looks good.

 

how wide are those tires??

 

They look like 255's or 275's...i guess they could be 295's but i doubt it.

as for the tries. Ive chatted with that guy befor. via e-mail long time ago.

Those are 17x11 Zr1 rims with 315's out back.
I'll have to look through all the pic's I have and find the other ones he e-mailed me also.

 

when you do this, do you have to remove the old amber color or does it stay on what do you exatly do cauze i have been thinking of ways to do this but can't come up with any

 

is it possible to pass inspection with this? i really want to do this to my car but not sure if i'd pass NJ inspection. if not i'd have to purchase another set of taillights

 

you shouldn't have any problems. new cars come with red rear blinkers why can't we have them. i can't see why there's a problem

 

One of the most important things when you do this is to REALLY clean the inside of the light that you are painting.Use thin coats and let dry in between coats.I used the VHT metallic red and make sure where your painting is warm that paint doesnt like cold weather......

here's another product VHT makes called niteshades. it's tint but it lets light shine through without dimming it, i picked up a can at summit for $11 but haven't done my lights yet. part num is VHT-SP999

do you have to revove the amber on the inside? or just paint over it?

????? If you paint the inside the outside still stays orange. I have an extra light and will try painting the inside but I just dont see it changing the orange.....

 

No you cant remove the amber unless you cut the whole piece out.I didnt think it would change either but it does.How to do it:
1 Take the lens off
2Clean the inside of the lense REALLY Good
3Let it completely dry
4Tape everything off on the inside you dont want painted
5Buy a Can of VHT METAL TINT PAINT RED part#sp232
6make sure you warm the paint in hot water
7Shake it really well and after each coat
8Do light coats on the inside of the lights letting dry between coats
9Keep checking the light to make sure that the painted part matches the other part of the light.
10let dry and put back on

Thats about it I hope this help..........

 

ok i tried to do this yesterday but i couldnt get my taillights apart, what are the steps you have to take to take apart the taillights, thanks.

There these 3 little plastic pins that sit on top and i think on the bottom(cant remember if there on the bottom)you have to pop out there a pain to get out They look like little round buttons from the top of the light.Is the tester paint your using thansparent if not its not goona work that great.........

 

does the whole lens pop out, or is it in sections. when i say sections i mean thepart that is the binlker,brake lights, and the driving lights(the onesthat go on if ur lights are on)


cause if it is in sections can i just get two lens that are red and pop them in there

I am currently doing this project and I painted the outside with Tester Candy Apple Red. It turned out great. I just have to apply some clear. I was told you cannot take these lights apart...

 

i wouldnt go any darker than that unless you can find some brighter bulbs. my tail lights are just a tad too dim i think, but the brake and turn signals are fine.

 

does anyone know what bulbs the taillights take? i've never taken one apart yet so i have no idea

 

do you think it would be alright to make the turn signal red and still darken it, or would that be too much paint to really show through? if it is, i could probably rig up some really bright led's to replace the stock bulbs. heheh, i'm on an led kick right now and i'm not sure why... thanks!

All tailights come apart...they are just not really made to. Mine (firebird) had clips that want to break when you take them apart. They also had some type of black really sticky soft glue like Butyl tape. It came apart and the glue was all sticky and stringy and remined my of hot cheese on a pizza, but when back together fine. It took me and evening after work to do mine.

The testors or VHT debate is simply preferance. I tried both and the testors compared to the VHT metal tint was cloudier. The VHT dried with a more clear transpartent look closer to that of the original lens.

With the VHT it is a transparent paint, so if you wanted to spray it on the inside and the Niteshades on the outside, no it would not cause the red section to be any darker then the original red lenses. You are basically tinting with a transparent color. Light still comes thru at the same rate, unless you spray on too much!

Again it is best to hold the light up and test its light transmition color compared to the stock red.
