exhaust poll

pick your side.............it's a proven fact that a single out exhaust tip setup will perform better than the fake dual exhaust tip setup that we are so use to; but does it really look as nice?

pick your side..

i agree that when done right the dual look is nice..........it becomes a preference of power or style.

i myself am getting ready to redo my exhaust....i love the fake dual look but can't justify the loss in power.

Im curious, how much power is loss with the duel exit mufflers?

I still like the look of the duels, but if you lose so much power, maybe it is something to look into

single exhaust is how I usually classify a 4th gen camaro/bird thats a V6 or a stang. Dual all of the way!

Took the words out of my mouth joshp14

I had single exhaust for a little bit and then went to flowmaster dual, and didn't notice and difference in performance. I was using 3 inch all the way with the single and still have 3 inch all the way until the muffler, then 2.5 in to 3in chrome tips. here is a pic

I think what he means by fake duals is when there are two tips coming out of the muffler and only a single pipe running from the headers to the muffler. True duals would be two pipes ran from the headers back. I am also curious about how much power is lost with the fake dual setup.

Dynomax makes a crossflow muffler (#17227) that flows 940 cfm which is good enough for 427 "loss free" HP (based on a formula and dyno test by David Vizard).

If you're making more HP than that, "how it looks" is the last thing you need to worry about. Not many people would be able to see it for long.

Did you put the dual exhaust on cause they don't run true duals from the factory.

Looks second, performance first for me. If I'm going to have dual tips out the back, the rest of the exhaust sure as hell better be 2 separate pipes connected to long tube headers

hamspice if you havent changed your exhaust at all then you dont have true dual exhaust, all thirdgen fbodys came with 2 exhaust manifolds that connect to a ypipe that go to either 1 or 2 cat converters, then to the muffler, so now everyone knows

Im with single. Im all for looks, but it is a proven fact that single exits on one side "makes" more power then the crossflow type that is oh so common on thirdgens. You can alwasy get an skp or a bolra that has 2 outlets on the drivers side.

My Formula has the SLP 2 on the left. I chose that exhaust for Function over form. I hate the bent tailpipe look, but it is the best design possible along with the Banks exhaust.

I love the look of the dual tips. I don't think you are really going to see that much of a gain from going with the single output unless you set the car setup up to drag and are looking for every little tenth of a second. Thats just my opinion though. If you are going to only run the single pipe I would suggest put it up under the car more like the stock pipes are because I just don't think it looks right but once again thats just my opinion and its your car!!

If you're not actually timing or dynoing your car, you'll never feel the difference. If you're racing your car, I can completely understand, but other than that, go with what looks best.

The only reason they flow better is because the intermediate pipe "in" hole on a dual muffler is typically smaller to allow for the "outlet" to come from the same side of the muffler. Since a single outlet muffler only has the 1 "out" on the driver side, the intermediate pipe inlet is free to be as large as the manufacturer would like to make it. While I can't give exact flow nembers, all performance mufflers for "street" cars are similar. Sure some certainly flow more.....but the dual or single issue makes such a small difference, it's hardly worth thinking about. Yes, if a few horses make that much of a difference to you, then by all means, go with a single outlet. But at the same time, why not just weld on a cosmetic pipe....or get the borla. All the first SS cars originaly came with the "single" out, and the Ws6/ram-air cars came with the dual. There was NO hp difference. This doesn't mean that there is NO loss whatsoever, but do you really think it makes that much of a difference?

Now if you have some high HP motor....that's a different story...

I'm a symmetrical kinda guy....

If it's on one side, it's gotta be on the other..........I'm sorry, but a single exit exhaust on a sports car just looks plain stupid.......

Imagine a 92 hood with only 1 blister, imagine a wing with only one pedastal in the middle, imagine only 1 t-top, imagine tint on only one side of the car, imagine blackouts only on one taillight, imagine rims on only one side of the car..........

Oh geez the list could go on FOREVER, GET THE DUAL EXHAUST..........Sometimes you have to sacrifice power to look good.....

I prefer the dual look over the single tip.

However, you forgot one choice, I'm going to be doing the no tip route, talk about sleeper look.

380hp estimated, and no tips in sight.

Fake duals - Two headers combine into one pipe, and then split into two AFTER the muffler

True Duals - Pipes don't combine into one that exit back into two

At least i think i'm right.....

unless horsepower is way up there cars with true duals loose power....

no reason to get in discussion over this as i was simply looking for preferences. here at the shop we put fake duals on cars that want a quiet but mildly throaty sound with minimal performance and we put the single out on the cars who want to hear and feel power.

it's a proven fact that a single out not only gives more flow which adds up to more power even on stock engines....but, they also change the tone of the exhaust making it deeper and louder. if i have to explain why you want your car to sound like that then you need a honda.

i agree that the classic fake dual look is nice and it evens out the back....it's simply a matter of prefernce. some want performance and others will sacrifice for a mellow tone and more common styling.

A dual exhaust tip setup looks way better IMHO.

However, is cost is no object and you have plenty of power then a stainless steel (or titanium!!!) true dual setup is the way to go.

Dual exhaust but exiting out the back in the center perhaps like redraif's? or traditional dual. I wonder if anyone has done a single exhaust exiting out the center?

I like the dual/dual look since it keeps the car balanced, looks wise.
I got this from my friends 96 Trans Am for $50.

Note: the I-Pipe has a cutout already installed on it.

I say true duals with side exit definitly the best look IMO. However if it goes all the way out back I'd say dual tips look MUCH better.

well with my car i ran my true dual because of the bad *** sound, mean as hell, and because i needed the flow, ive ran different things and talked with many people and most of them do drag racing driving their door slammers to the track and home after putting for under 10 second times, they told me taht my 3inch duals will more then outflow any kind of Y-pipe and crossflow muffler, theres just no comparison, the reason some "fake duals" dont flow as well is because the power, the smaller piping creats more force going out so it moves quicker, lower more mellow sound, i rather have it more slightly slower and have a deep idle and cruse then jump to WOT and scare the **** out of people.
