if it has had any body work, leaking top, check under carriage, door sagging, make sure all power options work, windows, locks, mirrors, cruise, all guages, make sure seats slide and recline, make sure converible top works properly and folds back all the way and properly, check A/C (recharged or not), and heater for proper operation...you might want to pull a carfax report.

If you drive the car (if its an auto) drive it in all gears, and drive a few tight circles for rubbing and/or abnormal sounds. also check for loose exhaust as rattles are annoying.

thats all i can think of as of right now.

The owner has had it for the past 7 years and only driven it 30,000 miles......

It has a new radiator, starter, rotors, brakes, plastic window.....

He said the top is in good condition and works fine....

I saw it a picture and all checks out.....

I'll ask about the power options though, thanks

Also the transmission only has to last me until June, then goes in a T56, so i'm not really worried....

Any more people?

I would look for any sign of rust. If the top leaks or any seals are bad or have been bad for awhile I would worry. I bought my car from someone in Ocoee, FL. I talked to them alot about the car and they were upfront about what they knew to wrong about the car. I drove about 6 hours to buy the car. The top was in worse shape that I was told so we re- negotiated the price. The car has been good -very few mechanical problems, but now it has rust.

You can ask the guy a million questions in the world and he is most likely gonna give you the answer you want to hear. you need to give the car a close inspection. any thirdgen that is approaching 100K is very subseptible(sp?) to numerous repairs weather or not it was well maintained. Things dont last forever. Here are a few things to look for on this car:look for a clean title, you can even take the VIN to resistry to have it checked out. look for accident damage, open the hood and look for non factory spot welds on the radaitor support. also look for non factroy spot welds on rear quater panels. look underneth for rust, if there is undercoating then it may be hiding rust. look for nuts and bolts that look like they may have been removed, look for chipped paint on them. this will help determine if the car has been repaired or moddified. look for overspray on plastic and weatherstripping. look under the dash for anything out of the ordinary(sp?). just basically do a real good look over of the car in general. if your satisfied, take it for a ride and see how she performs. dont just take the car for a joy ride around the block. find a parking lot and do a few tight turns and listens for banging or rubbing. Feel how the tranny shifts. I know you say it doesnt matter since you are replacing it but its the point that your still paying for it. check every single electric switch for proper operation. check the A/C. watch the temp as you drive. ensure that both fans come on. check the oil and tranny fluid. check for any rearend leaks. I could keep going but Im sure you get the point. One thing to remember now is that the car does have almost 100K on it so it wont be new and you will find problems. you just have to be smart and determine if its worth the asking price. When I shop for a car, I make a list of things to check and check them off as I look the car over and make a brief note of problems. The owner or dealer may give you the eye for doing this but its your money and your investment. make it a good one. Hope this helps and sory for the long post.

Most everything can be transferred over from existing Camaros. The things I'd be most concerned about are the convertable specific parts.

The top structure, the trunk-lid, the rear side interior pieces, the plastic around the top latches, and the latches themselves. The trunk-lid can hit the tonneau if mis-aligned, so check the two edges where they meet (assuming you ever drive/fly up there to check it out). See if the rear window is all cloudy or not, as well. That shouldn't stop you from buying it of course, but it's a hidden expense later on down the road that you should be aware of when making your decision.

Good luck, and hopefully it works out for you. I disliked convertables until I owned one. Now I couldn't imagine selling it.

Verts can be a PITA.

The trunk lid is the biggest pain. Examine it closely.
It seems to be the first thing that rusts on 3rdGen verts.

Check the alignment of the windows with the top - any gaps means that water can come in and the window will need to be adjusted or new weatherstripping installed.

Why not keep both? Some people can't live with some of the slight drawbacks of having a[n older] convertable on a daily basis. That's where having a hardtop is handy. Are you still paying for your current one?

I know most people on this board are serious about their cars and about the cars they would buy but would you actually trust someone else's opinion on a car that you are going to buy? My opinion on a car could be different than yours. Personally I don't like the 3rd Gen converts. So if I would look at the car for you I don't know if I would be able to look at it and decide if it would be a good car to buy. You would almost have to find a person that likes the same things about cars that you do. Would you trust that they wouldn't buy it before you did? I am not trying to bash anyone but I am just stating some facts. Some people are sneaky. I think I would have someone else look at the car too if there was that big of a distance between me and it. The car looks good. The pic is kind of blurry. Is it just me or does it look like the hood on the driver side is not even with the top of the front fender? It could just be the sun but I can't tell. It is totally up to you if you are going to buy it. Good Luck with what ever you decide.

I'm gonna call the owner again today to talk to him, and see why he can't do this himself........

What drawbacks are there for a convertable?

I paid off my car the day i bought it.....I'm only 18, so two cars is kinda a overkill

I am 20 and I had two cars and trust me having more than one is nice when you blow the motor in one and need to get to work the next day. Unless you have the parts to repair anything and everything that can go wrong I would hold on to both of them. Just in case. You might pay a little more to have both of them on insurance but trust me I know from many past experiences that having two cars is a blessing. That is your choice to sell one but I would think about it before you do it. Just my .02

owning the rag top

I bought my '89 RS convert about two years ago. I'm a bass player in a local band, so I love my music. Instead of worrying about someone stealing my stereo, I decided to get a cheap one off of U-bid for $100 and leave the top down. Passive infarred motion sensors on the 2-way FM remote security system (crimestopper $450) take care of the car when I'm at the bar. Unless you have boat-loads of cash in the car I woulnd't worry too much about someone messing with it. I parked my car on the streets of Atlantic City for 6 months and never had a problem. The only damage done to my car was when I accidentally remote started the car (illegal remote start on a 5-spd) and wrecked the front door of my condo. That was a $3k mistake. Now I'm thinking about swapping the stick for a auto. ....back to your dream car... Go for it. Don't worry about what could be wrong. If you love the car that much, you'll be giving it the TLC it needs anyway.
