How many of you have been sucked into keeping your thirdgen?
So far, I have planned 5 times to get a different car and getting rid of my thirdgen. For some reason or another, I got pulled back into my thirdgen project again and again. I don't think I could get rid of my thirdgen even if I wanted to because there always seems to be some circumstance for me to keep it.
At least now I have a good idea of how I want my car to look.
Any of you guys tried to buy another car only ending up keeping your thirdgen?
I don't know, there must be something special about thirdgens, because if it were any other car, I would have gotten rid of it by now.

I have owned my thirdgen since 2/26/94. I probably tried seriously to sell it at least 3 times. Still got it. Even owned a '96 Z28 for two years too.
I will never sell it now. The title will have to be pried from my dead cold hands.

I came close to selling mine for 5 grand cuz I wanted to get a motorcycle. It was a stupid decision on my part to put it up for sale, but am glad I still have it.
Now I realize how valuable that car is, and don't ever plan on getting rid of it.

so many times this has happened i almost sold my bird to get a 65 chevelle ss (needed full resto) i still kick my self for not doing that but at the same time i dont. then i got my elky but i decided to start biulding the bird again. all i have to do is keep reminding myself of the birds objective and i'll be fine.

I sold my Formula in October 1996 after I bought my '97 SS, but I missed it so bad that I bought it back in February 2000. It was hard talking the guy into selling it back to me, too. But it's back, likely for good. I will always own a '91 '92 Z28 or Formula, of that I'm sure. A third gen is the only car in my "stable" that I could not be without.
first car was a 88 iroc-z 5.7 camaro, but i wrecked it only a few months driving it.
than i thought do i need a fast car, and the answer was heck yeah and bought a 88 formula 350, then only after a few months driving it someone hit and a wrecked it..
again thought to myself do i want to try my third thirdgen and of coarse i have my 91 formula 350!!
i always want to have a thirdgen by my side... :hail: :lala:

The reason I brought it up was because I often think about getting another car when I see the appearance of my car becauses I have to have some body work done and then paint. It seems like I have so much to do that it's not worth it, but I can't seem to commit to getting another vehicle. I wanted to see if anyone else had the same concerns because I would hate to be the only one.
Ya, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to be a jerk. I know how you feel about alot of work to do. I saw the rust hole in your car in another thread. Don't let that affect it though...because, with time, anything is fixable...
I know what you mean, sometimes when I look at my RS (even now with the 4 colors) I wonder why I'm doing this. It has some rust work that needs to be fixes so it even leaks water inside. I have seriously thought about trying to sell it before, but I just wanted to use the $$ buy a different hard top 3rd gen. So I've never been unfaithfull to them (sounds like a relationship now lol). I've decided to keep the RS and it will become my track car, t-tops and all. I've just had it for too long and it wouldnt be right selling it. It deserves to be pampered with race parts and minimal street use. I have alot planned, when I'm done it will be a completely different car.

I think Crazy Hawaiian described perfectly my situation as to why I can't seem to get rid of my thirdgen.
It does seem like having my thirdgen is like being in a relationship. There have been ups and downs and so on. I have had for just too long to throw all the effort I put into it away.
The more things I do to my car, the closer I become to finishing it. If I could get the body work and paint done, everything else would be smooth sailing and I would practically be finished.
I think it is about time I stop crying and get off my lazy A$$ and not be afraid to put in some hard work on my car. Then I think the project will go along much faster. Of course extra funds would help too.

i will stand and be counted recetly to my dismay my fuel pump i beleave has went to crap again i keep telling myself trade in the t/a and get a newer car but no! i can't do it i just can't see myself trading in my baby just because it makes me angry sometimes i don't think driving would be the same if i didn't have my 3rd gen and if i did trade it in i would more than likely regret doing it a month later and i'd be back trying to by it back or something.

Im glad im not the only one who feels like u guys. No, my GTA will be mine forever, and i'll never, ever sell it. Ive said it to my parents, relatives, everyone, that this car is a keeper.
Some people think im crazy or something, im like why is that? Why, because is getting the "new" car out there is the "cool" thing to do? Is leasing a "new" car the "cool" thing to do, so u can blow your money every 2 years, and come out empty handed in the end, only to pay for another 2 years on a car again, which wont be yours to begin with!
I know what it is, its these other people who are like your crazy, have no idea what it is to have such great cars, and appreciate them so much. U know i GUARANTEE u guys that my GTA will outlive my moms 98 Bravada.
Also my dad had almost the EXACT same GTA about 10 years ago. It was red like mine, but it was those special edition GTAs, the 1988 ones with the unique notchback, that had the small back window that went downward, u know what im talking about. I think like few hundred of those were made.
Anyways my dad sold that car, but u know what?!? When we moved about 3 years ago, where im at now, guess what i saw!?! That same exact GTA that my dad sold is right down our very street!!! Its so awesome, he has his GTA, i have my GTA, and theres even another guy who has a sweet 2000 red Corvette few houses down as well.
Thirdgen forever!

After I wrecked my IROC last spring I wanted to sell it in favor of a 1957 Chevy Bel Air. I'm kinda mad that I don't have the '57, but at the same time I'm much happier that I still have my Camaro. After all, I could always buy a Bel Air later in life.
There's something different about owning a classic American muscle car. 35 years ago, my father had every intention of keeping his 1967 Camaro SS-396 in the family. Needless to say, we still have it. A friend of mine inherited his 1976 Camaro from his dad, and he's going to keep it for the rest of his life. That's how I feel about my Camaro now... I plan on saving it forever. These days, the popular cars are Hondas and Toyotas. Do you think they'll keep their "customized" cars for the rest of their life? I doubt it. They'll get rid of them as soon as they see the newest model Honda in a sequel to the Fast and the Furious.
I'm glad that we respect our cars so much that we intend to keep them forever and show our patronage to one of the best model lines that ever existed.

I regretfully sold my 91 Formula to a friend after it got to the point where it needed a lot of work. I missed it terribly and the guy who bought it from me just wanted to fix it up for the experience of doing so. When he finished working on it he needed to sell it, so I bought it back from him, for the price I sold it to him for plus the parts that went into it! Free labor, w00t!
I don't think I'd be able to ever sell it again though.

I have had a 3rd gen ever since i was 15. My current one is a sad sight
I try to fix it up, but i think it's a waste of money, so i'll be getting another formula in better condition TOO. My formula has a rebuilt 350, rebuilt 700r4, and runs f#$kin great, but it has a bearing going out in rear end (have 3.23 posi 4th gen disc rear) t-tops leak, no door panels, headliner.armrests, hood is full of pock-marks, 1 bent wheel, both headlights don't flip up, Driver's side tailight cracked, the paint is bad, and needs rf fender.
Sounds kinda bad, but so what?????
This summer my "beater" HAHHAH is getting 91 formula front and rear bumpers, new headlight assemblies with my custom re-built motors, i've got a 92 camaro interior with a perfect 89 formula console, new seat-belts, new interior plastic, Ronal Firehawk wheels, 4th gen wing or 91-92 fiberglass wrap, new paint probably red or silver (what-ever i decide will look good with red int.) Flowmaster 80 series dual borla tips, 3in intermediate pipe
Do i love my thirdgen? yes Is it crap now? yes. But I'll be the one laughing at the end of the summer when I've got a perfect stock TA,GTA,or Formula, plus this one!!!!! LONG-live the third-gen!!! and this website. brad keith

The red 1984 Firebird I have owned since 1998 (senior year in high school) will probably never be sold.
I haven't run into the situation of trying to sell this car like some of you have stated. My iron duke firebird is very cheap transportation. So I keep it because of sentimental value. I just buy other cars.
Now I have run into the desire to swap motors in the car for obvious reasons. Ive battled with keeping it stock or just going with an 8 holer. I finally decided to leave it stock and because i pay for gas, oil, and liable insurace, I will just get another thirdgen to work on, hence the 84 S/E.

I sometimes get that urge to sell or trade the 3rdgen for something newer and faster but I always hear this voice telling my dont do it, youll regret it so I end up just holding on to it and dumping even more money into it to make me happy that I kept it

I've been there. Every time I get in something else, I can't help but think about something I like better with my firebird. PLus, whether it's not being able to get the loan for a newer car, or some other unseen occurance, I can't ever seems to part ways with it. I pretty much consider my unborn child by now!

Best case scenario, I could get $800 bucks for my car. I can't get any other decent car with that, so selling my car is not a really good option for me. It is much more valuable in my possession.
I plan on keeping it forever, but it most likely won't last forever. However my car ends up, it will never be owned by anyone else.
I can't wait until spring when I can start working on it some more.

*** knows i wish i could sell mine and get a t top gta fully loaded and leather. but i put to much into my car i made her into what she is now and she looked bad before trust me on that, people use to say how ugly and $hit my car was, i was like ya just wate. now everyone of them wants my car and i get people tellin me everyday how nice my car is. that feeling of satisfaction right there knowin i did it all makes me never ever want to see my car.

Holding on to this one for as long as I can though, they're just too much damn fun to drive. I really want a 67-68 Camaro and have that as a fun car then keep or buy another 3rd gen for a daily driver. It has to be a 5 speed though lol. Sorta miss the days of banging through the gears.

I was going to inherit my dad's 78 Camaro when I turned 16, but we had to leave it behind when we moved. It kinda felt like we lost a member of the family. At least now I've got it's bigger more badass younger brother.
I know I'm gonna do my best to keep that thing for as long as I live. Supreme Member

Got WAY too much $$$$$$ in it to sell it. But if someone offered me $20,000.00 US dollars, then it's their's! I'd eventually build another one though!

I actually sold my 85 IROC-Z a more than a year ago to a co- worker he then sold it to our manager(the boss). Our manager bought it for hes son a 14 or 15yr kid that didnt like it (guess he didnt knew what he had). So one day my manager asks me if im still interested in my old camaro back, hell yea. I even got it back for less than what i sold it for, and the car was almost in the same condition. They never really used it much because it had no plates(ill work on that). I guess its true what they say "If you love something let it go,if it comes back it was always yours,if it doesnt then it never was".

I bought my '86 Trans Am in the winter of 1993. I always wanted one and just couldn't believe I finally had one. I have loved this car since I bought it and still do. Now me and the car are getting "intimate" as I replaced the interrior last year and just put on new wheels and tires. Now I'm in the process of yanking the 305 and putting in a Corvette 350. Hopefully next year a new paint job will be in the works. I always though I'd like to trade it in for a new Trans Am but now that GM killed the birds I reckon I'm keeping mine!

Ahhahahahah, its funny to look back at stuff you said a long time ago. That statement is very funny cause I still don't have a great idea of how I want my thirdgen to look. All I really know is that I want it to look nicer than it is right now.
Its actually worth more to me right now than if I were to sell it. I may not have the thirdgen forever, but I will definately have it for a very long time. To be honest, I am not an American car fan by that much, thirdgens just happen to be one of those cars I thought was just cool and just happened to be American.

Wish I'd had that kind of foresight...Oh, well. As for my RS, the only way I can imagine selling it would be for another thirdgen - and only the right one.
i knew from the beginning i wanted mine....i just didn't realize all the hard work and endless late night hours to get it where i truly wanted it. i couldn't see myself ever selling it.

The only thing that really bothers me is that my g/f says that she is jealous of my car.....which I think is crazy. I told her it's a hobby and it's something that I REALLY enjoy....any of you guys have any problems like this???

and i dont understand why some of you guys think of selling when you have literally thousands invested in your rides. i could never sell this car, even if i could afford to buy another one and build it up. i may not have much work done to it, but i'm proud of what i've done. just a feeling i get everytime i open the hood, or drive it.

Simply got too much money in it to sell it.
I would take too big a hit, but if it was stock, I would probably sell it for another car....

I'm in. Bought an 01ss as a daily driver because I didn't want to my thirdgen to get beat up. I'll always keep that thirdgen, now I just have to insure it. It has been in storage too long...

no, actually i have the opposite problem. my g/f has never been fond of my "girls" (they always got more attention than her) but just recently she bought a 2000 Hyundai Elantra, and she thinks it is absolutly BADASS.
she keeps telling me that i need "reliable, ADULT transportation" and that i need to "grow up and stop living in my muscle car fantasy land".
i keep telling her that there aint no "reliable adult" car that can run low 13's and spin tires though 3rd gear.
i swear shes lucky shes so damn hot because otherwise i dont know what id do with her.....

Sell my 3rd Gen? I probably would - IF somebody offered me a very obscene amount of money for it...
To be honest, I never really thought about owning a Camaro or Firebird. As a teenager in the early eighties I have fond memories of embarassing the owners of thirdgen F bodies with a HEAVILY modified Mazda RX-4. The car looked like a Toyota Celica but it would run lke a scalded dog. Of course it did not have the speed limiter at 115mph either.
I bought my Camaro about eighteen months ago. I had been saving my money and had just missed a '78 vette when I happened up on this car. She was just plain ugly. Bad paint. Bad top. Bad interior. Cheap tires and beat up rims. I put a bit of money and a lot of hard work and in about four months I had her looking pretty good. I have since fixed most of her other flaws and I am now getting ready for that all important HP Upgrade!
I have had a ton of fun getting this ole girl back in shape. Somebody on this site has a quote that goes something like " A car is never truly yours until you have blead on it." Well, if that is what it takes I guess my car and I are tightly bonded. Last saturday I finally fixed the broken Cruise control. That was just as good as winning the lottery to me.
So, If you know anybody who wants to spend an obscene amount of money for a thirdgen Camaro Ragtop send them my way.
Everything I've got is for sale, but some things are just too danged expensive...
Long Live the THIRD GEN!!!!!!!!!
