Clear coat coming off???
When I took the side moldings off of my car, I used an old ID card to get every last bit of the adhesive that they used off. I think, however, that in the process, I somehow managed to chip some of the clearcoat off. The problem is, it is slowly spreading. Is this a huge problem, and what can I do to stop/repair it besides getting an all new paint job. But if a paint job is the way to go, how reputable is Earl Scheib.
if you still have clearcoat left, or for anyone with peeling clearcoat, just give a real real light sand (even with 600 grit, or even scotchbrite scouring pads), then wipe with paint solvent, and respray clear. we did this on my brother's car, which looked faded and peeled, and basically awful. but since most factory clearcoats are pretty thick, if you sand through the faded part or wipe it off with solvent, you can get an 'almost-new' looking finish with only minimal work. with all the cars we've owned, it's always been the clear that gets faded/foggy, not the paint underneath, so don't do more work than you have to.
well you sure left him hanging..you cant just sand it and be done with it....
if you sand it, it will change into a foged clear then it will need to be buffed...
i paint so i would featheredge the spots with 6oo grit and 3m red (0774) the door for example and then reclear it..buff it out and your good to go
