2 Cowl or Not to Cowl?
2 Cowl or Not to Cowl?
I just recently installed and open element in my 92 RS(305TBI). I love it....I plan on adding a 2 or 3in hood cowl and i was just wondering if anyone know how this will effect my distributor cap? The distributur is right in front of the windshield and i just don't wanna have to worry about anything shorting out. Any ideas? Thanks
PS To end this whole debait on if an open element works I can let you all know IT KICKS A$$!!! I just put one in today and its amazing. There is a major throttle increase and my exhaust sounds so much better. I have a flowmaster 3in exhaust and prior to the open element it didn't get any louder after 3k RMP now with the intake It roars....I LOVE IT>> RECOMEND TO ALL TBI MOTORS.

definately go for it! I am running a 3" cowl with open element on my cc carb'd 350, but he computer doesnt like the extra cold air. However, i am in CA with all the emissions BS
But, the hood will most definately change the attitude of your car!
But, the hood will most definately change the attitude of your car! Now i was just looking at some of hoods and all that i have seen look non functional. I know I'm probably just being stupid, but they are vented right? I know its a stupid question:hail: Thanks

If you get a cowl, don't get something too big. I like the shorter, sleeker cowls.
Thats the only thing i worry about when i look at cowls...is it too big? 3in seems to be perfect. I'm not a big fan of those 9 in cowls you see on mustangs. Thanks for the input

Here's some pictures of my GoodMark Steel Cowl Induction hood. It measures 2 1/2" in the front of the air cleaner and rises to 4" in the rear.

I bought the hood from www.GoodMarkIndustries.com for around $429 plus shipping but Jeg's has it for about the same price.

I have an open element kit arriving tommarow. I got the SLP Cold Air kit from Thunderracing. I'm glad to know that you have had a good experience with that kind of kit.
On the subject of hoods though I really don't like the cowl hoods myself. I love the ram air I and II hoods though. I only think that the RAII belongs on the 1991-92 style cars but that's just my opinion. The SS hood I think is a better choice for Camaro's. Good luck with your efforts though.

my dad has the 4" and OMG! it's awesome! so awesome that i am making a replica of his hood with the HARWOOD outlawz28 4" cowl scoop, and i will graph it on to my OEM fiberglass hood from an 84 z28. The HARWOOD's are expensive, the bolt on 2" or 4" is like $400, but just the hood scoop, which is what i am getting, is only like $150.

Here is a pic of my car(its dirty and needs a good wash) but do any of you think that a 3 or 4in hood cowl would be too much? I don't wanna get a 2in cause i think that is too little of a cowl. Let me know what you think.

Thats only a 2in? It looks good, How much of the cowl is vented in the back? And did you notice a difference in performance with the hood? Like i said i just installed an open element and it makes a difference but will adding a 2in hood cowl make even more? Thanks for the pic...thats a nice ride
thanks i payed 150$ for it at a swap meet. have had no problems
yea its compleatly opean in the rear.. not sure what brand hood it is but if you want more pics let me know!!
i did not see a diffrenerence in preformance becouse i have a v6(FOR NOW) but the car dose not get as hot any more it seems to run cooler also saves lots of weight...
im pritty sure it's a 2 in..

thats awsome...if you don't mind do you think you could get me a pic of the vented portion and one of the hood up...just so i can see the underside of the hood? If not thats cool. Thanks in advance...I have a v8 and just put an edelbrock open element and the car runs a lil hotter but i think thats cause with out the hood it can only suck hot air. As far as performance you can really feel the difference. When i'm in motion and i hit the gas...you can hear the car roar up. Thanks thought for all the help

id say put the cowled hood on it. and since u have the open elemnet air filter on there with the stock hood u will feel a power lose in the hot summer. my brother did for awhile until he got a new cowlhood and he had an open elemnet and u could feel a powerlose from all the hot air being sucked into the carb. get the cowl hood if u have the open elemnet and plus it looks cool.
Xceleratemaro -> Thanks for the pics...I'm not sure what i will do...i like the way the 2in looks on your car, but the pic of the 4in on GKK looks good too. I'll just have to see..The pics really helped though. Thanks again.
I'm goin to put the cowl on...its been decided. I'll just have to see what i can get for a decient price. I ordered a 3in from company by my house but they called and said it'll take like 8 weeks. So i just have to find another. Thanks for all your help

I like the '69 Z/28 and SS cowl scoop... i think that size looks best on any Camaro '67-92... its not too tall or too short.
Its a 2.5" cowl BTW.

Not to try and change the subject but the Ram Air II hood also has a cowl to it as well. It has the scoops in the front and the back rises up about 2 inches with a cowl opening as well. Just a thought.
