widest tire?

whats the widest tire i can fit on a 7 inch wide rim. can i get a 255 or bigger on there? the wheel is a 14, so i have a good bit of space for a big sidewall. just like to note hat this will only be used on the track for traction.

i've got a set of 245 tires on 15x7 rims, but i think they're a bit tight.

I wouldn't go any bigger than 235's. I know a guy who owns a tire shop (Goodyear shop actually) and was asking him about what to get for my Z28 (15x7) wheels... says he reccomends no bigger than 235 for a rim that small. He knows his stuff too, so I trust the guy.

i only did it because i got the tires for $25, and only had the 15x7's to use. i don't suggest anything bigger than a 235 either.

i've seen a lot of posts asking this question. some people say they have 275's and they fit fine. personally i wouldn't go any higher than 235, maybe 245 but i think that's pushing it.

I've run 255's on all my 15x7 f-bodies with zero problems.. I've done 275 M&H Racemasters but they rubbed going around corners.. I'm currently running 26x10.5's on my 7" Z rims without any problems as well..

Cheers,

Even higher than 275's can 'fit' the wheel. However the tire will become distorted. 245's would be the widest I would go. Even then you will need to keep the pressure fairly low to keep the tread flat on the pavement. Here is a pic of 245/60R15's on 15x7 88 Iroc wheels on my 91 GMC Jimmy. They fit the wheel pretty good, but I have to keep the pressure low (around 30) so they don't wear the centers. If you are looking for big traction may need to look for an 8 inch wheel. Keep in mind that the tire itself play a huge role in traction--aside from width. A crappy high mileage cheap tire that is 10 inches wide will have worse traction that a 'good' tire 8 inches wide.

Not bursting my bubble, I know what they are and where they came from. Ask around, check the tech info on this site. Irocs could have 15's in 88 and 89.
Anyway, if you are looking for maximum traction, don't go any wider that 245 on a 7 inch wide wheel.

In 1988 the available 15 inch Iroc wheels where a 15x7 5 spoke 'normal' camaro wheel painted either all gold or all silver and an Iroc-Z center cap. In 1989 the 15 inch Iroc wheel was a 'mini' of the 16 inch Iroc wheel. This has been covered on the board and it's in the tech data:
https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/techdb.shtml
My guess is that you have a different center cap and you have aluminum showing--mine are all paint and a Iroc-Z center cap. If you want to keep arguing, post a new topic.

Anyway, those hoosier 235/60/14 would probably as good as any tire will on a 14x7 wheel.

on my camaro I had 235/50/15 on the front, and 275/60/15 on the back. The front worked fine, the back rubed if the car was weighed down or I took a turn really fast.
