Can you guys give me a walkthrough of painting my camaro.
The car is a 84 Z28, with T-tops, it has a little bit of rust, a few on the contour lines..can i just sand these? There are no holes and really not much rust, i just need to know how t get rid of the rust for good. The car is black with green ground effects, im going to go all black and later get grey or silver racing strips decaled (i dont want to paint them on). What are the steps i should follow?
Thanks

Sand it all the rust off, Use POR-15 to keep the rust off and out of the new paint.
Do all the best body work you can do without good to great body work your car would look like a junk yard peice with even a pro done show car finish.
Prime it, spray a base coat, sand it if you wish and do another coat, then spray a clear.
There are lost of threads about this very subject, you might want to do a search man.
Make sure where ever you spray it you spray the building down to keep dirt and dust out of your paint.

The best route if possible is to sandblast the rust out of there. Then what I have done is use a metal ready rust converter, just incase the blasting missed a bit of rust. Then if you wish POR 15 it however, I would only recommend putting the por 15 in the "pits" where the rust was and sand the flush with the base metal unless you are going to cover it with some filling compound. I would use a polyester glazing compound to cover up the areas that need to be leveled.( Then sand it smooth) I would then use a primer surfacer, this is a heavy duty primer with alot of solids in it.(regular primer is just too thin) This allows you to cover any imperfections. I would lay on about 4 coats sand with 180 smooth if need be another 4 if the surface is not smooth and level (because you probably have sanded off most of the original 4). Then once you are satisfied that it is level lay on 2 more coats and wetsand with 320-400. Then the best bet is to use a sealer primer. Then spray base color and 4 coats of clear. Then wetsand the clear the next day with 1200, 1500, 2000 and buff.
Just a quick synopsis, there is alot of technique in doing good body work and good paint. If you know anyone who has done it before just to give you some pointers it will help out. I recommend reading alot before doing it. Just like AlabamaThunder said if its not done right it will look like ***.
Here is a pic of my progress. In fact sunday the paint goes on.
