sanding clearcoat?

i ahve a set of iroc wheels and am going to polish them very shortly but i was wondering, could u just leave the clearcoat on and sand it off? i didnt understand the point in stripping the clearcoat and then sanding the wheels. i figured the sand paper would strip the clear off in the process. let me know what ur thoughts ar eon this

Theres no good reason too, unless you plan on changing the color or polishing the painted areas. I would just sand the clear off the machined areas. Not much more work and less mess. You would just destroy the factory coating on the painted areas.

If the painted areas are stained with brake dust. Just wetsand them with some 1500-2000 grit till there smooth.
