need straightened out on tires!!

okay, I've been told every which way to tell tire sizes and now I need to know what is right. Like a 295/50/15 tire... which number is the width and which is the height? I've been told all kinds of stuff and just need to get it figured out. Also, how do these measurements compare to using inches, like 29x10? Any help would be appreiciated because i need some tires soon..
Thanks

295/50ZR15 :

295 = width in mm (from sidewall to sidewall -- 295mm / 25.5mmPERinch = 11.8inches wide
50 = profile (aspect) : height of the side-wall based on a percentage of the width (50% of 295)
Z = tire type (z-rated)
15 = wheel size (15 inch rims)
