Car for sale
There is an 1987 IROC for sale by my house. It is in good condition, has ttops power windows and hatch, dont know if its got power doors. Its got the LB9 305 tpi motor with auto tranny. The paint is original. has the original rims. Its in great great condition. only one small dent on the drivers side door that you can see if you get the light reflecting off the door. There are 87,2xx miles. The car is rust free. Anyways, i have not talked to the guy yet to see the whole story about how many owners how the car runs etc. He wants 5,200 OBO for it. Ive got about 3 grand for it maybe 3200 at the most. Now ive looked up the blue book on several different sites and they all say its right around 2900 or 3000. So you think if i print of the blue book results from several different sites and show him, and then offer him like 31 or 3200 for it? Is that a way of bargining or you cant do it like that? (*Note i havent talked to him yet, hey may have the engine loaded with performance parts. RIght now im just assuming its stock.*) THanks guys!

There is really no rules to bargaining.
There are two things to consider.
He knows it is worth 2900.
So he offers it at 5200 so people will think they get it at a steal when they talk him down to 3500.
Why would he offer it at 2900 then end up getting it talked down to 2000?
5200 is probably his bargaining price.
-OR-
He just wants to get rid of it, and judging by the description you gave, he figured 5200 was a decent price. In that case, I am sure if you showed him a blue book value of 2900 and offered 3200, he would be the one feeling like he was on top.
At any rate, if you are gonna print something out and show it to him, find the lowest possible value for the car and work from there.
And DO NOT let him know you only have 3200.

i've never had to talk someone down on anything like a car, but i am constantly working to get good deals with my fireworks dealer (doesnt everyone have one? lol
He has a street vendors licence and stuff, so he isnt too stupid about this stuff.......
Basicly like he'll say he wants...oh....8 bucks for a pack of 12 little bee firework things......now i know if i could, i could get them from Phantom fireworks for 3 bucks a pack, but i realize i have no way of getting to the store and my parents arent too thrilled with fireworks, so i have to deal with this. So he wants 8 bucks.....i've got 10 bucks, but i've gotta last through the rest of the day (lunch and stuff), so i let him know that i dont have much money (i dont tell him how much), i tell him i have to get through the rest of the day, and i tell him that he's asking alot for those fireworks.....
Dont say much.....i just keep flipping the box over and over and looking at the rest of the stuff....I then tell him that i'm willing to go 4.50, and of course he says no way......so i pick up a few jumping jacks and like a few artificial satalite thingys and tell him 5 bucks for it all........ if he says no, i put the stuff down and just wait for him to talk.......usually he'll say something like 'come on....i gotta make a profit.....' so i pick up the bees and jacks, put them on the table, and put a 5 dollar bill and 2 quarters next to them, and usually he takes the money
(BTW i dont screw around with the fireworks, we use them in an open field in the evening, never when its real dry
)
So do the same with the car......if ya wanna do 3000 bucks, offer 2500....if he says no, act kinda like you proably wont buy it.......in this case, with the car, you could go over it with a fine tooth comb and point out every little imperfection and tell him that to fix it it will cost money and time, then say your willing to go 2750......if he really wants to sell the car soon and not many people seem interested, my guess is that he will say 3000 takes it, you get the car for the price YOU want, and who knows....maybe he will give in and go for the 2500 or 2750 price! all depends on how much they want to sell the car to you :-) Dont be afraid to take ALL the time in the world, tell him you will come back, maybe bring a mechanic with you so he (or she) can go through the more detailed stuff and give accurate info that he will probably trust a bit more.......just dont like let him talk you into a price you dont want to pay....chances are, if he WANTS to or NEEDS to sell it and not many people are stopping by to look at it, he will go pretty low
Thanks for your time, good luck

It is sad because it so true.
Everything I have learned about haggling came from Fireworks dealers at the local indian reservation.
And street vendors in Florence, Italy.
Some of the toughest haggling ever.

Wow guys thanks for all the info. Im almost positive my parents would lend me 200 dollars. I wouldnt be able to drive it because I wouldnt have money for insurance, but atleast id have my dream car!
And you know what, if this guy wont go for 3 or a little under oh well. Ive seen many many other cars that are totally modded out that are around the same price. And to my benefit, they were suprised I saw it was for sale. They have it facing the garage with another car parked behind it in thier driveway. I drive by this car everyday on the way to work (yes its slightly out of the way, but its a good motivator to keep me working hard) But anyways I caught the reflection of a for sale sign in the front windshield (facing the garage). The lady (his wife) seemed way suprised that I knew it was for sale. I did add in the fact that I am a huge camaro fan. So maybe she will pass that along to her husband.. maybe their looking for a good buyer who will take care of it.. lol i hope
but hey, ill offer what i can at the end of the month, wont hurt to try! Well again thanks for the info! See ya, Ill be sure to let everyone here know about how it goes!

Wait so say this all works out, and I offer him 3100 or whatever. He turns it down. Should I be like, Well if you change your mind give me a call and then give him my number? Or should I just wait a few weeks and come back and try to re negotiate?

I wouldn't rush into it man. It took a year for my bro to get his IROC.
If the car continues to sit there and he turned down your 3200 he may be thinking, I'll never be able to sell it at this rate, I'll just take the 3200. Then he'll call you up and let you know.
Patients is a virtue, if you continue to push the deal and he knows how much you want it, then he'll try to get every penny out of you that he can.
Just play it cool and if he wants to sell, you'll get it. If he never sells, which as been the case for me, something better comes along!'
good luck and keep us posted!

One thing to consider is that you can take KBB and NADA values and burn them. They are horribly inaccurate when it comes to our cars. Nice thirdgens are hard to find, and are capable of getting more than book value. On the flip side, thirdgens in "typical" condition are a dime a dozen. Whether this one is worth what he's asking can be debated until time comes to an end. What you need to do is decide what it's worth to you, and what other similar thirdgens sell for in your area. Around my area, nice thirdgens are so hard to find that it's impossible to really determine what they are selling for.
Another big problem is that everybody has a different idea of "nice". I can't tell you how many times I've seen people walk up and down somebody else, saying "I paid $2k for my L98 mint IROC blah blah blah". Then I saw pics of the car, or saw it in person, and it was pretty obvious that they got what they paid for.

Nice thirdgens in my area are going for just under 6k in my area, no lower than 4k usually. It all depends.
You also have to consider this, you're asking on a thirdgen dedicated web site, where most of the guys here know these cars pretty well inside and out. We're going to have a lot better idea of what that car is worth. Sure blue book or whatever says the car is worth 2900 or 3000 or whatever, and sure the guys here might tell you its worth 1500, but that doesn't mean that guy won't find someone willing to pay 5200.
You can always try and talk him down, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have someone else willing to pay that price.
I pay'ed about 6k for mine 4 years ago, and it's only a 6 cylinder. By the time I paid tax and title, interest, and a warranty, I probably totalled 7-8k. I wish I had searched around for one in slightly less shape for cheaper, I found all kinds of hidden problems in mine that I had to get fixed because I didn't know anything about camaro's at the time.
I guess what I"m trying to say is, the car is really worth whatever he can get for it.

I agree with Jim and Mathius. A really nice thirdgen is worth way more than the book values. They are crap when it comes to a nice thirdgen. I bought mine for $6500 and it was mint. The high blue book was $6k. I didnt have a problem paying the extra cash for such a nice car. I am kind of mad now because the spoiler and paint went to crap four months after I bought it but it was 13 years old at the time.
Also, just like everyone else said, take your time. I looked for my GTA for over a year. Granted, I was looking for a fourthgen but when I found her, I knew.

Well I guess its gonna go like this. When I get about 3500 in the bank, if its still for sale, ill offer. If he passes it up he passes it up. By the end of next summer hopefully I will have close to 7k in the bank to spend. Jeez im sure gonna feel guilty spending that on a car, should be going to college...

Patience is the key. Also do not make yourself look like you are dying for the car in front of him. If he sees you really want the car he will keep a high price. Make him win you over. Show him what's wrong and say how much its going to cost to repair. Give him a price like $2700 or something. Bring the cash with you so you won't have to go get it if he says. Keeps him from changing his mind. Plus when you flash the green it helps push them over
Never let him know how much you have or are willing to pay. If he asks how much you would like to pay tell him nothing you want it free. Don't make prices just bring down prices. Good luck. If he won't go low then just pass it up. There are always other cars out there. Maybe someone you know will sell their car and you can get an even better deal. I bought my car from my next door neighbor. Paid $2500 for a 60k original miles Trans Am all original. Never raced or abused. She just used it to get to work and back.

Here is a picture of the IROC. I found some more problems with it when his wife was showing me.. she couldnt get the hood to shut, all the hydrolic arms dont work, the radio system is shot, and lots of minor things like that.

If your parents are willing to put the car on thier policy, you might be in luck. Typically, if they have an older car or a car less percived as "sporty", you could flip-flop "primary drivers" to save your skin on insurance.
(i.e. my tbirds, while they have the same v8 as the mustangs of the time, are observed as a non-sports car, thus the insurance is about 1/3 of the camaro, a car almost 10 years older.

i wouldnt work at walmart... they only give minors 16-20 hours a week, which only gives you about 100 bux a week and they R-A-P-E any weekend time you might have... try a grocery store or... as bad as it may sound, if you love working with customers go to a fast food joint and run first window... time flies by....

Definately take it easy and one thing i've learned is sometimes i've learned to just walk away. Thats what happened with my bird the lady was asking 2k for it it was in pretty bad shape back then but i was like i only have 1500 on me and she said no she wanted 2k firm. I siad i may be able to give her 1600 if i got some cash from my parents. What she didnt know was i had 3k to spend but knew that wasnt what the car was worth. I kinda walked off dissapointed then i get home after working all day to find a message on the machine saying she would take my 1600 for it. I was going to set my price up around 5k for my bird and let people work me down a little but i realized at 5k people might be scared away. Although i have 7k into it and i think its worth more others dont i set my price at 4200 firm but i will probally go down to 4k. Patience young grasshopper

Another thing to think about, if you can't really afford the car, imagine the insurance on it. You are 16, and prepare to be r-a-p-e-d in insurance costs if you can get insurance on it. Just a comparison, I am 25, and have 4 cars insured. The 87 camaro, 79 malibu, 95 & 96 v8 tbirds. The insurance on the camaro is more than the other 3 cars put together! Good luck, whatever turns up!
youd be surprised. when i was 16, insurance for my iroc was about $120 a month. thats for liability, and comprehensive, no collision. thats for a 16yr old, 1 ticket, and a v8. pretty reasonable i thought. then when i was 17, i picked up my 'bird. insurance on that was $180 a month. thats for 17yr old, the ticket was gone, and the car was a v6. i asked why it was more for a slower car and they told me it was because firebirds are smaller than camaros and they arent as strong. well after another hour of me arguing and explaining that it was essentially the same car, i still got stuck dishing out $180 every month. insurance really has a knack for screwing you over.......
