primer ????

this might sound like a really stupid question but im curious.. can i use any kind of metal primer on my car or should i buy specific automotive primer and why?

What do you mean by "any type of metal primer?" I painted some metal stuff outside the house using Rustoleum primer first, then Latex paint. That stuff is meant to be brushed or rolled on. Definitely not the way to go with your car.

Why are you trying to get around using automotive primer? Primer is cheap. Wait until you price automotive paint.
