To strip powder coat?
I am hopefully trading my IROC rims for a set of 91-92 Z28 rims and they have been powder coated Grey, they look like they are just plain stripped metal and are very dull but it doesn't chang my mind on them.
I ned to know if there is any way to strip/remove the grey powder coat from the rim? I heard sanding is the only way and if so then what grits/process is the best way of removing it?
any help will be greatly appreciated.

I'm not SURE but I've heard the only way to get powder coat off is to heat it back up to the temperature it's put on with.... sanding would probably work, but it'd be time consuming...

I can't personally attest to the product but, it's rare eastwood carries joke products.
IIRC, TPI383 (I hope I remember the right name and what I'm about to say
) said that soaking something powdercoated in carb cleaner over night (if you had a big vat of the stuff) will strip it as well.
As far as blasting.. if you are using glass bead and they are aluminium, the pitting won't be severe. It will have a 'texture' to the touch but, nothing a light sanding won't take out. As far as painting over, it will make paint appear to have a slightly more sharp orange peel.
I bead blasted and cleared my TPI last motor re-install and with just a quick once over with MicroCut 2000 & 3M glaze.. its very smooth. Not sure if that answered anything... I'm just rambling now...

the spray mentioned above says:
"Want to get away from Methylene Chloride and still remove tough urethane, epoxy and powder coatings?"
With some research I found that Tal Strip II A.K.A. aircraft stripper that is usually recommended to remove the clearcoat and paint when redoing rims "wich is what I used to strip & polish my rims" is made of 75% Methylene Chloride
I'll see if it works and post results, I really can't bead blast because it's a direct rim swap, my rims for his rims, so they'll be on my car w/ tire and I don't want to shred my tire up lol.

I bought the aerosol Aircraft stripper from PeP Boys,it took the clear AND powder coat off my wheels,Its pretty strong stuff
it works better than the brush on stuff that is made by the same company

I had opposite results and so have others, the spray is weak compared to the brush on stuff & there is less in a spray can than the quart of brush on.
But for powder coat maybe i'll give the spray a second chance..

Pure methelene chloride....
We used to strip all types of finishes with the stuff when I worked for an Antique refinisher. This crap is super dangerous though (we wore repirators, hazmat suits and crazy gloves when stipping). After the MC, hit them with the bead blaster and then polish them.
