working with fiberglass
working with fiberglass
I'm planning on making my own air box and would like to use fiberglass to make it. However when it comes to things like fiberglass molding I'm clueless. Anyone know of any sites with FAQs? or have any exp that they'd like to share.

On the "other sites" technical resources they have an article on working with carbon fiber. Basically it is the same. You have to have a smooth surface for what ever side is going to show. Lay the mat down mix the epoxy put a small amount down, and squeegie the epoxy around. Basically you just want to "wet" the mat. I am thinking of making some carbon fiber door sills to replace the factory ones.

I just had my first experience working with fiberglass. My daughter had bottomed out her 1992 Firebird and broke both ground effects that are between the front fender wells and the nose. The best price I could find in replacing them was $90.00 a piece. I bought fiberglass matting, tub of fiber filler, tube of spot putty and a can of white paint matching her car. I wet down some newspaper and molded it to approximate size I wanted the ground effect pieces. I let the paper dry to the shape I wanted and then put a thin layer of vasoline on it. I went just a little larger than they originally were so I could cut them down afterwards. Patience and preserverance paid off. Two days later her car looked like new and I had under $30.00 invested in the project. Give it a try, you might be surprized how easy it is, I was!

Thanks guys I feel much more confident now. Looks like this weekend I'll give it a try.
BTW I'm planning on making a RamAirBox clone with it. Won't be a perfect clone, but it beats spending $220.
