Clear Coat

How many coats can a gallon of clear coat be put on my 91' Z?

I'm thinking of placing 15+ on it.

You want 15 coats of clear!!! Damn you are going to be spending a LOT of $$$$ on the clear coat alone. I was going to put like 8 or something and I thought that was a lot. Personally that is just over kill. I think a gallon will do like 3 or 4 coats.

If you put 15 coats of clear on it will be a half inch thick and will crack before you get it home. As long as there is enough clear on there to wetsand and buff it, you're all set. My IROC has 3 coats and required about a quart if IRC.

I've heard of plenty of people using large amounts of clear coat. I figured I'd try it.

People that use a lot of coats of clear usually wetsand each coat individually, but I don't see much of an advantage in doing that except for some real dark colors and some metallics. Sometimes it can give a "deep" look, but in side by side comparisons of the same color, I can't usually see a difference. I think it may have mattered back in the days of lacquer, but the new urethane paints flow so smooth that you can lay a good paint job down without the coats. Lacquer used to go on relatively dry unless you put it on thick, and putting it on thick almost always made it run. Because of this, people did a thin coat then wetsanded it, and repeated it 15 times.
