What is the proper tire size?

I'm getting some 17x8.5" wheels (Z06 ) all the way around, and I am having trouble deciding the tire size.

I've been looking at 255/40, 245/40, and 245/45.
Right now I'm running 245/50 on the stock wheels, and I definitely want something with a lower profile.

I'd like to get the 255/40 tires, but I'm afraid they'll stick out of the fenders. Also, I'm not sure if they are the proper width for the wheels. On tire websites they usually say a 255 will fit a 8.5-10" tire, but then there is something listed as "measuring rim width" and it is usually "9."

The 245's I have are pretty wide, but again I'd like something a little wider. For people with wheels similar to the ones I'm getting, what is the proper tire?

EDIT: I'm also looking a Kumho Ecsta 712 and Hankook Ventus HRII H405 tires... they are cheap and have good treadwear, but how do they run?

I would go with a 255/40/17 I have them in the front and they look and feel good.

AWESOME car man. It looks really nice. It looks like you lowered it, but before you did, did the tires rub inside the fenders at all? Like when you turned or backed up and turned did they rub?

Also, do they stick out of the fender at all? The wheels Im getting will need spacers, so I don't know if that will make them stick out..

Thanks!

What kind of tires are those anyway?

I'm thinking about getting Kumho Escsta 712's or some Hankook's.

Thanks for the compliments. The car has Eibach Sportlines, the fronts don't rub at all, and the back fender lip has hit the edge of the tire a few times when it bottoms out and scraped it a little. I have an adjustable panhard bar, I Just need to get it re centered. The tires are Yokahama A520 with a 285/40/17 out back. They don't stick out, the backs are close but don't stick out past the fender.
