Ok, I can only find panels that are NOT the color I need. Although people say to paint them.

What are the steps to paint plastic panels (door, console, etc)

I have heard you need to chemically prep the surface, and then use a special type of paint that is almost a dye.

If you just use standard type of paint it will peal an chip.

Anyone with experience in this area?

yes, it is spray dye you use. prep plastics by cleaning with acetone or laquer thinner completely. For plastic,, go over the pieces with a scotchbrite pad (similar to what you use to scrub pans with)to give the dye a 'porous' surface to stick to otherwise it will rub off easier. vinyl usually readily accepts dye. the 2 major good brands are mar-hyde & duplicolor,,, I preferr duplicolor because it has the fan spray tip covering more area. I've used both and they seem equal in quality with ease of spraying going to duplicolor. As with painting,,,don't try to get the color in one thick coat.

I use the SEM brand dye. Seems to work fine. On the can, it will list what prep is required an what needs to be applied before the dye. SEM uses SANDFREE before the dye is applied.

I painted a pair of kick panels with some $4 can of vinal paint from Parts America. They've been in the car since July, and have been kicked a few times. So far they still look perfect.

By the way, the door sill is original, and unpainted. As you can see, the color match is excellent.

I've used the duplicolor vinyl paint in my Z28. I did a complete color change.
You Definitely want to be careful about your coat thicknesses... Make sure you use very light coats. If it gets too thick, it will scrape off. Several light coats works perfect.

Stuff works great. I just scrubbed the original panels with a ruff spong and dawn soap, then sprayed the bonding agent and then the final color paint (black of course) and it turned out great. Just go to my site below and see the before and after pics.
