Help me pick!

Sorry if this is the wrong forum. Didn't know where to put it.

I've been looking all over for a clean thirdgen, and it's down to these two. Here are the specs and pics:

92 RS
305 TBI(ew)
103,000 miles
5speed

OR

91 Z28
350 TPI(yeah!)
110,000 miles
700r4

Both are the same price. The black one I'd have to fly to KY and drive home though(extra $500). I just can't decide. I like the red color better, but I really like the 350 tpi option in the black one. Cars are pretty even paint/interior wise. It all comes down to color/performance and location. I'm not going to be modding for quite some time. I own two business's and work crazy hours. I need to be happy with the car as is. I'm leaning towards the black car because of the motor. I don't think I'd be happy with a 305tbi car.. but then again I really like the red over the black.. UGH..

Yeah, that's what it really boils down to: Manual or Automatic?

Tough choice but I think I agree with the other members of the forum. Go for the 5.7 (unless your daily drive is not stop and go). In Travis county, THE SUCK traffic, you won't regret having the auto and:

"There is no replacement for displacement."

Where is Autin are you? I just left Pflugerville/Williamson Co.

Lol.. ok 91 Z28 it is.

I'm in Cedar Park. The traffic used to suck bad, but since they completed the 183 extension it's been MUCH better. 15 minutes compared to 45 to get to work and back.

Ok well I better go buy my plane ticket.

Well um.... THE 1991 Z28! If you want a hottest and best performance 350 3rd gen, then i would go for the 91 Z. If you want a hot 3rd gen with decent gas mileage and a daily driver then go for the TBI. Just my 2 cents

I'd definitely go with the Z if at all possible. Even though it's a bit more trouble, you'll definitely enjoy it more in the long run. Personally I think it's worth it.

You also have to consider, if this is his daily driver then he'll probably want an auto. I love a manual as much as the next, but in rush hour traffic it's just damned irritating!

I'd prefer a manual, but yes it will be a daily so the auto is almost a must. I can always throw in a T56 later on if I really want a manual

For some people, my z is my daily driver and i dont really mind rush hour traffic all that much with it. The stickshift is like second nature. As for the less horse thing.. id still take it, the direct connection between the motor and the wheels makes the car feel more powerful .. and when my car had the old lg4 w/ 178xxx miles and 7 cylinders i could still powerbrake it and i beleave it was only beacause of the manual.

EDIT: If you plan on swappin a t56 in then id go with the 91 z

Oh yeah. No question.

Black car purty.

Make sure the A/C is good. I don't have to tell you that (really).

You also have to remember that 91 Z28's are considerably more rare and collectable than 92 Rs's. Furthermore, the 91 Z28 has way more extras: the Z28 hood, the 5in spoiler, the fog lights, as well as power options and possibly leather. Besides, the paint on the 91 appears to be very well done/maintained.

Z 2 8 D u d e - Without a doubt. Besides, a stick in traffic ins't the end of the world. Think of it this way, all that sitting in traffic with an auto is just flattening the blades in your torque converter anyway

Get the Z28, you'll be much happier. And if you want a stick, its not hard to swap one in. Much easier than making the RS haul and handle like the Z28.

I'm curious too. If the emissions laws in CA continue the way they are going, the only place I am going to be able to sell my car in the future is going to be EAST of the Nevada line. Car prices around the Bay Area are rediculously cheap.

The Z is in Kentucky, right?

The 91Z28 is an obvious choice, tho it would be easier to swap
a 6 spd and LT1 (example) in the red RS.

I rather swap engines than auto/manual trannys ..

Either way, chose what you really want, and examine futur investments .. if you plan on repainting the Z28 red ...

THo if you dont plan on modding, the Z28 has much more value for the buck.

did you get the 91 z yet? Seems like everyone would hate you if you dont! lol j\k Garentee you will have more fun in it, and I would much rather have black with red detail, rather then red with black detail. Course you would haveta buy the red decals but I think that would be sweeeeet

Okay, okay! I must be an exception to the rule, but in my daily driver I have papers from work strewn across my front seat, generally talking on the phone with someone about said papers and balancing a cup of coffee.

Actually, now that I think about it, I'm also quite an unsafe driver. Hey, um, at least I don't speed! at me. Heh.

Price Breakdown

$3800 for car
$400 for plane ticket to KY
$200 for gas and lodging on the way home

So I paid about $4400 in all plus about $200 for TT&L. I'm off to Ennis TX for the finals of the NHRA drags! See you guys in a couple days.

So how did it drive from KY? What are the problems with the car now that you've "bonded" with it on the drive?

I know the feeling you have now. Ain't it great?

Keep the auto and just beef it up, add a converter, shift kit, and a manual-automatic valve body so you can manually shift it. That will be just as fun as manual, quicker, and easier in traffic. Its cheaper than full manual swap. Thats pretty much what i am running and couldnt complain about it!

Nice car. Those 91-92's in black really stand out as one of the finer camaros ever made. Its not the same driving an RS over a Z28 5.7L. I dont care how nice the RS is, if you have an oppertunity to go Z28, then by all means do it. just my opinion.

Good choice man, I got an RS at first, drove a Z28, and spent three months straight sellin the RS to get a Z in much worse condition, but much faster hehe... the RS was auto tho, my new Z is a 5spd, 350 too. Only thing though is my damn torque arm bushings are totally wasted.

Feels strong, very strong in comparison to the previous car (L03). The T-5 is a total difference in driving for me, versus the auto. But, it was quite a transition, a good one at that though. Much more control, yet I haven't gotten to the point at which I've really opened her all the way up.. gotta get a safety check first, it jes expired.

Made IT!

I flew to KY thursday night. He picked me up in the car, and we made the exchange. I headed towards Louisville KY. I got there around 1am and checked into a hotel. 7am the next morning I started the trip home. I stopped in Bowling Green KY and went through the national corvette museum. I drove all the way through and got home about 2:45am lastnight. All in all about 18 hours driven yesterday. It didn't go completely without a hitch though. The car runs a little warm. It's got a new radiator, water pump, and thermostat in it, so I'm not sure why it's running warm. The dual fans are wired to a switch and run the entire time. It also has a mis in the engine. Not sure if it just needs some plugs/wires or if it's an injector. Could the two be related? I didn't think a car would run warm if it's missing.

All in all it was a great trip. It poured rain all the way from Dallas to Austin, so that sucked. I had a blast though. The car is beautiful and it runs GREAT even though it has a mis. Some photos here

Try again. I forgot to set it to a public album. Yes, I filled the parking lot full of smoke at the museum

how hot was it running. 240 is considered to be normal for our cars. I thought it was a little high so i changed my thermostat to a 160 and a hypertech cooling fan switch and it hasn't been over 220.

btw congrats on your car

It was running at 240. On the way home, one gas station stop it did boil over a little bit. I picked up some new plugs and a 160° thermostat tonight. I'll toss those in tomorrow to see if that cools it down and fixes the miss.

I'll post some better pics of the car tomorrow.

Try a cap, rotor, and some wires.

make sure to get the hypertech fan switch for the 160 thermostat. I bought the 160 thermostat with a stock fan switch i saw no difference in cooling. after the switch, it kicks in the fans at 160 so it will stay cool.
