Kandied........

What about painting the engine bay black with some nice designs (tribal flames, etc, etc) in the same color as the rest of the body........?

the 82 is going to have the black flames over the pewter body. I ahve thought about bringing the black into the engine bay, and then having some flame work in there. Most of it will depend on the final flame design on the body. One way or the other O plan to carry the flames into the interior as well as the engine bay!

that's a great idea except i don't like the solid designs on the car. now the ghost work that's being done... that's a different story and could possibly be worked to come out nicely.

Just a raw basecoat. The only bad thing is it scratches way too easily.

As for Kandied, how about using the body color, just lacking the effects of the body. For example, if a metalflake, just do the engine bay the same color without the metalflake. I guess that will only work for certain effects though. I hope you get the idea I'm trying to get across.

You should definitly look into it........

Don't get too crazy with the flames and paint........remember the most important part of the engine bay.....IS the engine........The paintjob should COMPLIMENT the engine, not compete with it for attention.....

Ghost Flames would do wonders to provide a nice subtle custom touch to it.......

Exactly. My basecoat looked like a satin finish. It had more luster to it then just a flat color. So I would think a satin finish would look too much like it was a factory job. Granted it would be a stronger finish!

I say body colour also.

The problem with black is that you can not see anything half the time. part of the engine will show well but as you go down the side of the block it kind of disapears. Look at the Chevelle picture. you can't see the frame rails nothing it is like the engine is levitating in mid air and at that their is only half an engine because the black absorbs the light going to the bottom of the engine bay.

redraif, is their any other way? candy paint will control you all...

the one nice thing about doing a non body color is being able to make some of the key features stand out like suspension and others. you'll never really know what was the right choice until you've made the mistake.

I cant really vote on this subject...i guess it depends on the overall style of the rest of the car...if its like the last car you did I'd vote body color...

but once again it depends on what look youre going for. I plan on doing the engine bay in my car black..but then again its a daily driver not a show car...

either way im sure you'll make it look right

a lot of factors again here. that very uncluttered engine bay of the carbed chevelle looked awesome black (especially because the brake booster and master cylinder hide in the bay and the engine pops out at you) but a car with more things inside the engine bay might look better body colored.
after seeing redraifs bay again i think i like the body colored engine bays on thirdgens. just my opinion.

BTW jeff what color are you thinking for the block and heads etc?

406TPI gave me my inspiration he has a beautiful body colored engine bay (the body colored heater box tops it off)

Thats how I like it.

the reason I decided to go to a black bay was 2 fold.

I started out by simply cleaning up the bay. Swapping for red looms and silicone hoses. I added some additional painted pieces in red. Before I knew it it began to get too red. I had a sea of red in the bay and it was hard to distinguish things! I wanted the bay to pop out. I had to find a balance.

Now I also wanted the engine to be painted. Well that would ahve added even more red. Then i saw what I wanted...a March ad. The engine was Candy apple red. That was the pop I wanted. That with some brite work would be prefect. But candy apple engine against a red bay. I did not think it would look right! So the bay went black!

The car now has the Accessories balanced b/w chrome, candy, and polished aluminum. The block and intake is candy apple as well. Oddly the red looms, hoses, and STB did not look too bad with the candy.

Now I have a few more body color red pieces...the suspension, since it gets abused much more by the road! I figured it would be so much easier to touch the stock red up then candy, plus lesss layers of paint. Why red sus. Well I figured if I was going to take it off and clean it. Then paint it to fix what time has done to it. No way was it going black. For the effort I wanted it to be noticed.

I really dont like black engine bays. To me, it looks like the car was originally black...and they sprayed the outside really quick and forgot to finish the engine bay.

It just doens't look "right" to me.

certainly a valid point... i don't like flames but that mean that i don't like your paint job? everyone has a different opinion on the matter. the whole topic of discussion is about that which is good. i was bringing it up in question though because of all the other elements in an engine bay sometimes they can get overlooked when your blinded by bright paint.

i will be staying body color though. if it werent for the fenders being so large i would go black but it's too much area to have black in my opinion.

Yeah... the paint has huge flip to it... but it is very red. when it isn't in direct light it goes dark red. The colour is PPG Sunset RED... it is created by using Sunset Red candy over PPG Pure Gold base coat... then several layers of clear. I'm really curious what colours you are looking at for your project...

the hardest part is finding the right gold. i can't find anything that compares to hok orion silver in a gold which is discouraging... gold just makes the candy so much better.

i've been playing with blue, red, orange and black candy...
