to lower or not to lower

hey i have an 88 camaro with ground fx is it worth it to put a 1.5 in drop on it or will it make it impossible to go over any speedbump or driveway w/o damaging something

damn where is that "this post is worthless without pics" icon.

if it is the stock suspension most would lower it but if you live around steep inclines and or speed bumps yea you probably would scrape your gfx quite alot.

Not to hijack, but what about without groud effects? Would a 1.5 inch drop make the bottom scrape over speed bumps or big potholes as are prevalent around here?

It all depends on the bumps or driveways you go over. When my 91Z was dropped with the Sportlines (advertised 1.5-1.8" drop) I didnt have any problems. Maybe a small scrape here or there (lower airdam under the car), nothing that ever damaged the car and nothing that got me stuck. It scraped about the same as my IROC with stock FE 2 suspension.

another thing you might want to consider is the drop springs would be new, If you've got stock springs on there i'd have to imagine that they've worn out at least a little in the past 17 years... 1.5 inch is prolly 1.5 inch on a 17 year younger set of springs right?

Drop it and just take the bumps slower...the looks are worth it for a scrape here and there.

I'm planning on dropping my '92 RS an inch.

BTW How do dropped cars do with long tube headers?

My 92RS has Pro-Kits on it. The front always scrapes the end of my driveway, no matter what angle I take it at, forwards or backwards. It's not even that steep... it's just that the road curves slightly downward towards the sidewalk, and the incline is relatively sharp to meet the height of the sidewalk. It doesn't help that the front wheels are so far from the front of the car, either. It's pushing me to consider air ride suspension so I can bump up the front ride height when I get home.

Aside from that, it never scrapes.

longtubes and a drop , o have fun with that , probably not a good idea to go with sportlines , maybe a 1 inch drop . but be careful then.

i would say its gonna scratch with a drop. It depends on where u live though...if theres a bunch of speed bumps and steep drops out of parking lots and stuff (like where i live ) i wouldnt lower it. Plus the front ends of camaros are a lil long.

I did the dropzone springs which are similar in drop to the sportlines and i only scrape going out of my driveway or any other steep incline. But as for driving around town its not bad. But watch out for big speed bumps i have drug the entire length of my car and almost got hi centered and i always go at speed bumps at an angle.

Im definately going to lower my GTA with the dropzone springs 1.75 front and back and i dont think anyone should have a problem as long as you take it nice and easy and be extremely careful when

1. Parking
2. Going up driveways
3. If you see speed bumps do your best to avoid them (take another route)
4. Know the roads you are traveling and make sure you avoid dipping or humped intersections that will cause damage

If you are careful then youll take the extra time to watch what your doing at all times probably keepin your car even safer from wrecks and other damages

BTW anyone with pics of lowered TAs or GTAs all ive seen are maros

Here is a pic of my old 84' Z that I put some Ebay springs on.

They were not dropzones, they were called "Sprint" lowering springs.

Anyway, it came out low, mean, and bad azz as far as i am concerned.

The car was an 84 so the GFX didn't scrape that much, but the air deflector for the radiator did though, which will be what you scrape the most.

So are the cheaper non eibach springs good and reliable? Is there any reason that eibachs are better or are you just paying a extra 100 bucks for name?

Also is it hard to put them on yourself or do you just need to jack up your car and then what???

The non-eibach springs are fine.

If you are just going for looks, then they are especially good. eibachs and hotchkis, etc. have tested thier springs on the track so they can boast about their cornering capabilities, while the no-names usually do not.

Rear springs are easy, fronts can be hard, but since they are lowering springs, they go in pretty easy.

I would not suggest doing it yourself if you have no idea how to do it.

there is nothing more dangerous than a compressed spring, they are bombs waiting to go off. Ive seen one tear up (it almost went thru, left a HUGE hole) a BRICK WALL

so leave it to the pros unless you have a spring compressor

or maybe this isnt so relevant, whats the suspension set up on camaros?

Here is my '84 Im working on, I just put dropzones on, Ive drug it on a speedbump, but this is the first time Ive ever driven a lowered camaro.

It rides like its on rails, and looks mean too, even if it isnt one color. Dont worry, I'm working on getting it one color.

We don't need to use spring compressors for our cars. We do have struts in the front, but the strut and coil spring are separate. It is not a strut and spring assembly over the strut.

All you need to install stock springs is a prybar, and lowered springs sometimes slip right in with very little if any prying.

I just undid my ball joint for the front with the car as close to the ground as possible. as soon as the joint broke free the garage floor caught the a-arm then i just jacked the car back up slowly and the springs fell right out.

Sportlines on the front, stock in the rear,

Sportlines on all 4 corners,

and a shot with some 17's,
