scratches in metallic paint?

my sister backed my dad's LHS (Chrylser) into a Chevy that was sitting directly across the street from our driveway. she scraped the lower portion of the rear quarter panel against the guy's front bumper, leaving several rub marks on the paint (mostly superficial, as far as i could see). it's gonna take a little more than water, though.

my question is thus; can i use polish (scratch remover) on metallic paint? it's a silverish color. i didn't want to go ahead and use the rubbing compound on it and just ruin the paint more since i wasn't sure. any tips? can i, can't i? thanks a lot.

I think that will work since there should be a clearcoat over the paint anyway so as long as you don't go through the clearcoat it should be fine.
