clear coat question

I am painting my iroc and am also doing the rims b/c the car had the black and gold package on it. i was wondering when i paint the car and rims if i could put clear coat over the rims(even the aluminum face part of the iroc rims) or would it distort the shine of the aluminum?

my guess would be that it wouldnt distort it, but i dont know how long it would stay in good condition.

i dont know if staying in good condition would be the problem b/c i would think that the clear coat would protect if anything and you could just buff it a couple times a year like your regular paint on the car. If the shine would still come through on the aluminum or chrome then i think it would be protected, but i dont know?
