How are flames painted on a car?

I've always just wondered this, and I'm bored, so I thought I'd ask. Do body shop people use a pattern that they lay over your car, to they custom-cut one up, or what? Thanks in advance.

With a blowtorch. Seriously though, they are usually custom cut masks. They mask most of the front of the car and use a pencil to draw in the flames. Then when they have a look they like they cut along the pencil lines and peel off the mask in the area to be painted.

The Eastwood Company ( http://www.eastwoodcompany.com ) is now selling that kind of flames kit. It comes with the pattern-making tools, you just add the paint.

Come on guys, you don't use a kit!!! Where's the imagination? Where's the customizing in that? All you do is spend every moment that you can looking at pictures of cars that have them and then practice drawing on paper the style that you dig. Then when you've got that down, get some 1/4" masking tape, or the blue "trim tape", and go at it. If you want, you can take a Sharpe or Marks Alot permant or washable and draw them before you mask. Sorta like a guide. Trust me, it's easier and looks better this way.

The majority of the kit is the pounce wheel & blue powder...

My friend put flames on his Dodge Dart (I forget the year), I think it had a ***** 6 in it? He drew them on the car in pencil, layed down some newspaper, and went at it with yellow, orange, & red paint. Looked good! Of course he didn't really care about the car or how well it came out, but it came out good for a very minimal amount of work.

[edit] Well, I'll be damned- why did it censor s-l-a-n-t 6?
