removing scratches from interior plastic?

removing scratches from interior plastic?

is their a correct way to do this? maybe a real fine grit paper? i dunno, thats why im asking you!

i used 2000 grit sandpaper - rubbing compound - polishing compond - standard polish to remove a nasty stain on one of the interior plastic pieces. It actually worked a little too well cuz it's way shinier than any of the other black plastic pieces in the car.
