Racing Stripes Corvette Grand Sport style
Does anyone know the significance of the two red stripes on the driver's side fender of the Corvette Grand Sport? I think they look pretty cool, especially since they're only on one side. I was thinking about putting something like that on my GTA when I get it repained. I'd like them to be color matched to the gold rims.
What do you guys think?
What the heck do those stripes mean?

I heard that in some race (Trans Am?) there were 2 Grand Sport Corvette cars and they put the stripes on one so they could tell the difference and they stuck them on the production cars, somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm pretty sure that it is becasue when the original Grand Sports ran at Nassau in 1963, three different colors were used on tape on the front cowl of the cars to help identify them as they passed the pits at speed. Red is used on the 1996 Grand Sport on the left front fender as a styling enhancer to tie the two generations together.

2. Q: What is the significance of the the red hashmarks on the front left fender of the Grand Sports?
A: During some races of the original 1963 Grand Sports, the teams placed strips of tape (rumor says duct tape) on the fenders instead of numbers to identify the cars.

Wasn't there a member that ghosted those on his camaro?
Either way I kind of like the idea and it might look good done in gunmetal/charcoal/silver color on your black paint.

i thikn it would look nice with the gold and the GTA wheels. i dont think i would paint them on though. My buddy has a grandprix with them on it and he put decals on it. it looks pretty nice. that way in caseyou dont like it itll be a little easier to get it off

I think a 91-92 Z28 with a 2 Inch cowl hood and painted like a GS would look awesome. Matter of fact it's likely my next project.
However I wouldn't like it on a bird. Stripes just don't look right to me on Birds. the hood and roundness of the car just doesn't give the stripes the right lines.

TPIroc had that same idea, only a bit modified. Personally, I think it looks cool.

wow, thanks for the ideas guys!
yea, after seeing ontario iroc's pic, I think i'm gonna steer clear of it. The camaro that outlaw305 posted looks great! and steve, I've always loved your paint scheme. It makes me wish I had a 87 - 90 GTA to get that look. I'm not sure how the single stripe would look with my more rounded front bumper.

you hated it? I LOVE IT! the thing about me and these cars is that I dont like a lot of "flashiness" Our cars are beautiful as is, so they dont need crazy graphics and paint jobs, etc etc. But your one stripe is so subtle, its awsome.
On my car, I love the subtle gold accents from the rims and the GTA badges. If they were black rims, I'd totally go for stripes. But, i think that gold rims and gold stripes might be overkill for my car. You pull it off nicely with the black rims tho

Outlaw... wow, that does look bad a$$. i wonder if anyone's done it to a bird.
crazy jim, if you ever were to make your mitsubishi faster and/or prettier (NOT RIC*), those white stripes (in paint of course) wouldn't look bad at all IMHO.
BTW, you can't put honda and ralliart on a mitsu! pick one or the other
Steve, now that I think about it, your car might not look bad with the Grand sport stripes (in white of course), but it might be overkill.
