help restoring formula alloy's

Has anybody redone any formula alloy's? I'm looking for info on polishing and re-coating the clear coat on a set of rims I recently bought. I've stripped a set already, polished them and the first time I got caught in the snow where the roads had been sprayed They started to get black pit's on them and repolishing them seamed not to have much affect on getting them out.
I want to do it right this time and need info on the best product to strip the coating, polish, and coat them to protect them from chemicals. The last set I didn't coat them with anything and the cloride solution they spray on the roads around here really screwed them up! Before that happened, everyone wanted to know how I got them to shine so good.
