Did we pay too much?
Personally I think that He got a decent deal. but here's the low down.
My buddy and I yesterday went and looked at a 87 Camaro IROC. its a true l98 car, with rear disks, Flowmaster, shift kit, t-tops, Intellitronix dash, TPIS Runners, ASCD SS hood, 4th gen seats, etc.. paint needs some work, dashpad, etc. he paid 4250.00 for her. what few pics we have are here for now.. will get more soon im sure.. but first night out and all..
1987 Chevy Camaro IROC
So is she worth the 4250? too much? too little?
OH, and about 5 years ago this car was owned by forum member THOR. when he owned it i think it went 14.4 or something in the quarter before the shiftkit and the TPIS runners..
thanks for your thoughts.

Here's how I look at it.. As long as your buddy doesn't feel ripped off, then the price was good. To me "overpriced" is subjective.
Think about it, you see these guys at a Barrett Auctions ponying up hundreds of thousands of dollars for a car... To me that is overpriced, to them, it's probably a bargain. It's all relative...
Of course I say that cause back when I bought my car, everyone thought I was nuts for paying what I did
If it is a good solid running car that he can build on, then that sounds about right. That's what they are going for here in Florida.

Nailing down prices is hard, especially just going by a few pics, but I would say that price is at the higher end of the spectrum for the car described. I've seen quite a few thirdgens, even well-option l98 cars, sit stagnant on the market for that money. If the car has zero rust, then I'd be happy about it and not worry too much.
Congrats on the new purchase, enjoy it.

The pics are coming out real big on my computer. hard to tell the condition of it.
You have to think about if it was your car that you had for sale. How much is it worth to you. I wouldnt just give mine away either, if it was a good car. 4200.00 isnt alot in todays market for a decent car.
They are only going to go up in value in time. Getting while you can!

thanks for the comments. Origionally i dont think he was hoping to spend but 2k for a good driver 3rd gen.. then we saw this car, and I knew of it from here, and he went and drove it and had the cash on him.. it being a l98 car with rear disks, and still having all emissions and what not, and having the hood and appearance he liked is what sold him on it i think. I dont think he felt he paid too much, but only time will tell. I think overall its a good car, solid platform to build on. reality is the car is 20 years old, Hell its a classic now!! and it is his first F-body. I did try to warn him of the quarks of o ur thirdgens, but it didnt scare him too much, so we're all in now. Other than that, Im excited for him, wish i had a TPI motor in my droptop to be honest

I paid 4750 for my bird and its only a TBI. Too me it was a great deal cuz it is a manual tranny car with essentially no rust(none on body, some surface rust on reaar and suspension components). Also, only 48k miles(which I don't think were racked back cuz the interior and exterior and engine compartment are so clean and T-top seals are in great shape). I also wanted something that was all stock cuz I like to do my own bolt on mods and keep the stock look.

I paid 5k for my stock car that had an apparent89+k miles. However, the color, options, and clean int./ext. were all part of the deciding process.

Well, in October, I paid $2800 for my 350 TPI '92 Formula w/t-tops, one of 300 or so such cars produced. Car has no rust or rot, was unmolested, doesn't smoke, shiny paint (but cheaper job).
A friend of mine has l98 thirdgens, clean and with new paint, that he puts on here and elsewhere for $3500-$4500, and he just gets strokers, no buyers.
But it's true, if your friend is happy with the car and the money he spent, then everything has worked out for the best.

it's hard to say really both my Iroc's I paid $2k cash for. Both running and both under 100k miles. Both have been my daily drivers. my 88 was for 4 years and the 87 for almost 2 now. Alot depends on where at in the country you are. Also they both have no rust, and no dents.

I bought mine for $600 from my cousin. (84 Z28)
Was repainted Black after having the bodywork done. Few blemishes, had sat for about 5 years, getting started every year and a half or so. In the process of replacing the ball joints, shocks, struts, idle arm, tires, exhaust, and giving it a tuneup (rebuilding carb). Its bone stock, and the interior is off, but I have it and will be putting it back together.
The reason for most of this, was because my cousin was restoring it. Glad he got the paint done
because the other stuff I can easily do, seeing as I work at O' Reilly Auto Parts

i think he got a steal. i couldnt find one when i was looking for an iroc but i wanted the 350 and the 5-speed and i settled for a 305 auto... and my car needed to be repainted. so i think as long as that car is very reliable and the paint looks good on it with no rust id say he got an awesome deal on that car.
Kinda high IMO i paid 5400 for my fresh paint, fresh 350-375HP crate engine with 2,000 miles that is also a 5 speed car, 98 interior new rugs, new t-tops, freshly painted engine bay. But i also think i got a really good deal.
Car has new rims and a fresh t-56 along with much much more engine work now.
Pics of it here with the new/old rims on it.

Is this the guy that was at the meet at the Flying Saucer who drove your black car? That's awesome he got a Camaro, I bet he is so happy!!! Very nice car, not sure about the price, never really shopped around for one since 5 years ago when I got my 82 Berlinetta for $600. I got the purple car for $1,700 exactly how it was when you saw it.

From the webpage
"This is my newest ride, an '87 Camaro IROC. It is a True 350 car, 8th digit of the vin is an 8, which makes the car a l98 TPI v8. Another way that I verified this is that the car DOES have rear Disk Brakes and the 9" 3.27 rear end."
I hope you mean 9 bolt, instead of 9 inch
and how does that have to do with verifing that tis a true l98

Yes, wendy he did drive my convertible home that day.
as for the information on the car, i found it on this forum, which is what i used to see if it were a true l98 car to begin with.. granted i didnt pull the motor and run the numbers, but it does appear to be what it says it is.

Looks like you got a nice deal. If there was ever someone that paid too much for third-gens, it's me. I overpaid on a GTA last year (I was so excited to get back into one that I didn't do my homework on the car) and I won't even go into how much I paid for the current one. To me, though, it's worth every penny and I have no regrets.
Enjoy your new ride

I bought it in 04. It had 118k miles and, for a car that was a daily driver, it was in near perfect condition. It was very well maintained (even the engine bay was clean), the interior was clean, and the t-tops don't leak. I may have over payed a little, but if it doesn't have any major mechanical problems, it'll definately pay off.

that does seem high for a v6, but if your car was as good as you state, im sure it was worth every penny. I think that you yourself are the only judge if you paid too much or not. I personally think that on this deal for my buddys 87 iroc, he got a good fair deal. Hopefully everone feels that way when they buy a car though!

I know people who pay over $100 for a t-shirt and over $200 for a hat. Crazy? probably in a normal person's mind, but they earned the money and if that's what they like then I don't give them hell about it.

From an insurance point of view, he payed too much. From a collectors point of view or a hobbyist point of view, no he didn't. I could say the same about my car. I have it set up with my insurance company that I pay a little extra to have my car insured at $7000.00 ... they have no problem taking that extra money, and I dont have to worry about losing everything I have spent and put into her, if anything were to ever happen to it.

Unless your in the 10K realm like myself i think u got a fair price on both sides of the buying and selling side. I can complain all i want but the truth is Hagerty Classic/Muscle car insurance insured my car for 15K total coverage so i ain't mad at em
now if i can only pass emissions to drive it
Congrats on the car welcome to the fam.Rick
There are alot of factors that come into play when you buy a car. I bought mine of a guy in upstate New Hampshire for a cheap amount of money. The area where he is from has a very low population and there wasnt really wasnt a market for the car up there. If it were for sale down where I live, the price of the car would be much more money. Everybody is familiar with New England weather. Its nearly impossible to find one around here with ZERO rust.

Not to mention the rest of the interior is in great shape. The only thing that I need to really fix is the headliner. Not bad for a 20yr old car.

I see on the website you said it has z28 emblems on the outside, i believe those are the proper emblems for an irocz in 87. Great car, i really want that hood for my car.
