First time bodywork and paint - All DIY

I thought I'd post some pictures of my paint project... I did a little work over the summer (which got interrupted by an engine project for a family member), and then took a little over a week off of work to prep/paint my car.

I did it in my parents garage.. We set up a paint booth inside (lining all of the inside with plastic sheeting), complete with a nice big exhaust fan. Fumes were not a problem at all.. There were a few areas that needed some work (the right rear corner (shown in the pic), and some hail damage on the roof, but it all worked out pretty well.. This was my first time doing any of this, and I have to say, I think I did a pretty good job...

The paint is Napa Martin Senour Crossfire basecoat/clearcoat.. I used two StartingLine HVLP guns by Devilbliss (I got them through Eastwood for ~$120, one gun for primer/sealer, the other one for color/clear), on a 30gal cast-iron pump compressor.. No problems at all with the compressor..

For now, I'll just let you see the pics...

Still have to wetsand the clear and polish, but it looks damn good compared to before... It's got a new fiberglass spoiler as well...

Nice job, sounds like you did your homework! Painting nowadays is way overrated IMO if your not looking for a 100 point show car. The new base/clear systems such as the one you used (been my preference for years) are almost foolproof and easy to fix mistakes. You did everything right and the results speak for themselves! Isn't it cool to say you did it yourself!

Thanks a bunch everyone for the comments... Its very awesome to be able to drive around in it and know that I did the paint myself.. Now that I've done body/paint, the only thing I haven't done on the car (other than new seats/carpet) is the rear axle (new posi and gears are in my possession though, have to buy a hydraulic press still)..

Definately happy with my choice of going with base/clear... Once I sprayed the color, some friends and I went over the whole car and wetsanded the color before I shot the clear--what a difference there...

As a fellow Banshee-Bird owner, I love your car.

You should be proud of your work, the car looks great. Big thumbs-up to you.

Just the standard GFX..? I think it looks pretty good with them on, although I prefer the older GTA/TA GFX.

Good job on the paint/fix, although the hood not lining/matching right bugs me. It's your car though, have fun.

sweet work, the car looks great, just do something in the front to get that hood to tuck in a little more, otherwise, it looks awesome!

Yeah, a little adjusting should fix that hood right up!

It looks AWESOME! I wish I had the nerve to paint my car myself ... maybe one day (at least it doesn't really need it right now )

Maybe I can practice on my dad's 86 T/A!!! LOL

much better, but i think the stock hood would looked better , just get it fixed and it will look better if the ra2 fits better, and what about doing the rims black with a polished lip . but it looks much better just fix the hood and your golden .

Don't worry man, I'm with ya there... The hood isn't perfect (boooo), but it does need to be moved down some... Unfortunately, its hitting something under the hood (more bad design??).. Haven't taken a lot of time to see if I can resolve it.. It may be hitting the ram air box (which I can move back toward the engine some if needed)... I'm going to try to align it better eventually...

Wetsanding the color was really easy... We used 600 grit for the rough areas (for some reason, parts of the roof, and some of the front end sprayed a little rougher, still good coverage), and 1000 grit for the rest... It took maybe 40 minutes for the 3 of us to go over the whole car...
