...if you want to do it without damaging the paint, you need to use a solvent, and it makes one big mess for sure. A spray on remover like GUNK will do it, but it takes many many applications. I was going to remove the undercoating from my engine compartment while I had the engine out of the car recently, but it took me so long just to do one small spot I abandoned the idea. The local classic car restoration shop (that do this all the time when they are restoring cars) quoted me $500.00 to do it...

I think not!!!

a heat gun could work too, just use that to soften up a spot then go over it with a razor scraper. Acetone thinner works to break down stuff like that too, just soak some up with a sponge and hold the sponge to the spot for about a minute or two then use the razor scraper. you might want to use rubber gloves and a mask, the thinner can get nasty and the fumes suck.
