I was thinking that it wouldn't be too difficult to remove the section of the roof between the A and B pillars and put seals there so it could be removed. You could put short pins in the front and two locking handles on the back to hold it in place. On a car with subframe connectors it would still be pretty solid as well. I don't generally leave my car out in bad weather so a tiny leak wouldn't be a huge problem. Where would I be able to get some weather stripping in long lenghts like that that would seal it up well? Are there any other things to consider or problems I may run into?

I've seen it done on a white 92 Z28. It looked good with the top off, but the top was made of canvas and looked like crap IMO.
I've cut the center strip off of an 85 T-top car. It's a pretty clean cut. The extra metal from the strip could easily clean up as they looked only to be tacked on. You'd have to move wiring around.
I think if it was done well and used a painted fiberglass or smoked Lexan top instead of cheezy canvas it would be pretty nice.
Definitely would look at chassis stiffening. I would like to see one done well. Maybe even with T-top pins in the back and the same quarter-turn latches used in convertables in the front.

jm, GCFBA is a loose group of f-body owners of all generations from around cincinnati, we have almost 100 members now. We have a message board and get together at the dragstrip, cruise-in's, etc.. Click the link in my sig to check it out.
As far as the top goes, I was going to re-use the piece of metal I cut out of the roof, that way it would look like a hard top (except for the seams) until I pulled it off!

Watch A&E for Simon&Simon. The show was out in 1982 when the thirdgen came out. The car they use on the show has this very thing done to it. Check around for S&S fan sites, and see where they lead you...
