Has anyone done LEDs in the 90-92 gauge cluster?
Has anyone done an LED conversion for the 90-92 cluster? I have white overlays that light up with themselves right now and they look really good, but the way they're designed sometimes the speedo needle hangs on them coming down down from over 70 and I have to tap the cluster to knock it lose. I'm looking into getting a 145MPH speedo and if I do that, obviously, my 110MPH overlays won't work any more. I was thinking about getting LEDs to go in it. I think I'd probably go with white ones becuase that would look better than trying to shie a color through the yellow text, but I might get red ones to replace the lights for the needles. I'll have to see how the lighting is setup when I get it. All the pictures I've seen are of the pre-'90 clusters and the light looks uneven becase it's brighter and a different color than stock, but I'm wondering if that same thing would happen on the 90-92 cluster. While I'm at it, I figure I should go ahead and to the console light and the HVAC lights, I know the dash and console is a 194 bulb, but what does the HVAC use? I didn't even notice any bulbs when I had it taken out.
Anyone who has done the LED conversion on it but doesn't have any overlays or anything, please post up some pictures!

I dont have any pics.. But I put the led's in my cluster. And then took them out a couple hours later. It looked like crap. Too dim & the light was uneven. In addition, since the stock overlay is yellow, my blue bulbs looked like they were green.

Being the money it'll cost to do the conversion and people who have done it saying it really isn't worth it, I don't think I'm going to do it. I'll probably just try and find the 145mph overlays.

You are going to need more than the 145mph overlays if you want it to work right. You are going to need the whole gauge cluster out of a 145mph speedo equipped Z28. If you just put the overlays on your stock gauge, it will read wrong. At 110mph... Your cluster will read 145mph.

If you buy LEDs with multiple leds on them you will have a bright enough display.Im using 3 & 4LEDS 194 style lamps.Plus a few that are wide angle as well. This pic is from my 84.So they're not the style of gauges you have. They are brighter looking at night & in person.

I think the problem is that the 90-92 cluster only needs 4 bulbs to light it up, the older clusters use a lot more. I was going to use the 5 LED bulbs (4 on the side and 1 on top). I talked to krisb (can't remember the numbers in his userid) and he said he tried the white ones first in his cluster and they sucked.

Dont use the ones with the LEDs pointing out to the sides.Since the light will go mostly to the (back)side instead of forward.I wish i had the extension pieces i found in a GM car at the J.K, but if you look at the pic, in the forground is a grey one that is for #74 lamps. The 194 bulb version is about 1 1/4 in long.Compared to the stock(green)one. This puts the LED much closer to the gauge.Allowing more light to reach the face of the gauge.Next to the grey piece is a wide angle LED.In the background you can see(L-R)a 10mm,a 4out 1forward,a 5 & 9 LED lamps.I dont have a 4 LED which is the other type im using along with the wide angle. Also in the metal trim bezel that surrounds the gauges. The rear facing side is painted blue. What i did there was attach 5-6 1/4 size squares of double sided tape to the surface evenly spaced. Then i applied strips of aluminum foil to completely cover the blue surface. This bounces alot more light onto the gauges than the blue surface.Sounds quirky, but it worked for me.

I got my 145mph speedo today, it the 5 LED bulbs with the 4 LEDs on the size will be useless in the 90-92 speedo because of the way it's designed. These bulbs would probably be best: eBay Motors: 194/168 White High-Power LED Lights Bulbs Running/Wedge (item 150053607778 end time Nov-07-06 21:10:19 PST)

The LEDs on those are tiny(the squares in the cirlce, top view).Thats not to say they are not as bright.Although i would'nt mind giving them a try myself. If someone buys them first post pics & results.BTW, his shipping is pretty steep for TWO bulbs!
